"Family Matters" actor Jaleel White, singer Gladys Knight and National Football League player Donald Driver will be among the 12 celebrity contestants on the next season of the ABC dancing competition. Other famous faces participating in the 14th edition include "The View" co-host Sherri Shepherd, singer-songwriter Gavin DeGraw, "Little House on the Prairie" actress Melissa Gilbert and Disney Channel star Roshon Fegan.
The new cast, which also includes tennis player Martina Navratilova, "Melrose Place" actor Jack Wagner, telenovela star William Levy, operatic singer Katherine Jenkins and "Extra" co-host Maria Menounos, was announced Tuesday on "Good Morning America." The contestants will dance their first routines with their professional partners March 19 and March 26, and the first couple will be eliminated March 27.
Last season, actor J.R. Martinez and professional partner Karina Smirnoff took home the mirrorball trophy with reality TV star Rob Kardashian and partner Cheryl Burke coming in second place in front of former talk show host Ricki Lake and partner Derek Hough. But there is one trick that I haven?t discussed, which is standard practice in the algae-to-biodiesel community: they grow their algae in water heavily enriched with carbon dioxide, which might be col- lected from power stations or other industrial facilities. It takes much less effort for plants to photosynthesize if the carbon dioxide has already been concentrated for them.
In a sunny spot in America, in ponds fed with concentrated CO2 (concentrated to 10%), Ron Putt of Auburn University says that algae can grow at 30 g per square metre per day, producing 0.01 litres of biodiesel per square metre per day. This corresponds to a power per unit pond area of 4 W/m2 ? similar to the Bavaria photovoltaic farm.
If you wanted to drive a typical car (doing 12 km per litre) a distance of 50 km per day, then you?d need 420 square metres of algae-ponds just to power your car; for comparison, the area of the UK per person is 4000 square metres, of which 69 m2 is water (figure 6.8).
Please don?t forget that it?s essential to feed these ponds with concentrated carbon dioxide. So this technology would be limited both by land area ? how much of the UK we could turn into algal ponds ? and by the availability of concentrated CO2, the capture of which would have an energy cost (a topic discussed in Chap- ters 23 and 31). To grow 30 g of algae per m2 per day would require at least 60 g of CO2 per m2 per day (because the CO2 molecule has more mass per carbon atom than the molecules in algae).
If all the CO2 from all UK power stations were captured (roughly 212 tons per year per person), it could service 230 square metres per person of the algal ponds described above ? roughly 6% of the country. This area would deliver biodiesel with a power of 24 kWh per day per person, assuming that the numbers for sunny America apply here.

The Gators, who never led, trailed by double digits most of the second half. They whittled the lead to five on Kenny Boynton's 3-pointer with 1:53 left.
But Georgia (13-15, 4-10 SEC) scored the next six. Dustin Ware and Donte' Williams made two free throws each and Caldwell-Pope followed with a breakaway dunk to make it 73-62.
Florida (22-7, 10-4) is second in the SEC, one game ahead of Vanderbilt. Bradley Beal scored 19 for the Gators, who close the regular season this week at Vanderbilt and at home against No. 1 Kentucky.
Florida had won 10 of 12 overall and had taken of 15 of 17 against Georgia, including three straight.
Donovan held out Walker for nearly six minutes of the second half before the school's career assists leader returned to the floor, replacing Scottie Wilbekin with 12:17 remaining and Florida trailing by 12.
"It's not all on him to score and get all the assists and everything else, but I think as a senior you would think he would want to take that responsibility a little bit and show that kind of passion considering that he's got two regular-season games left in his career," Donovan said. "But he didn't do that. I just felt like his energy wasn't where it needed to be. He wasn't playing as passionately as I thought he needed to be, and I just thought I'd give some other guys a chance."
Wilbekin, a sophomore, went scoreless, missing his only shot from the field and handed out one assist in 22 minutes. Walker, who has started 105 of his 136 career games, finished with 14 points and one assist in 31 minutes.
After the game, Walker spoke to reporters before Donovan did.
"Our defense usually gives us easy buckets, but we didn't get that much in transition," Walker said. "I'd just say we missed shots, and they made a lot of plays on the offensive end, and it was tough for us to recover from that."

The Public University of Navarre (UPNA) and CENER (National Centre for Renewable Energy) are taking part in a joint research project on renewable energy and based on electricity microgrids which enable enhancing energy efficiency, reducing contaminant emissions, increasing safety in supply and minimising electricity losses. The project is co-financed by the Government of Navarre, and by the European Union through its FEDER Funds.
The project, known as "Design, development and implementation of microgrids in Navarre", aims to generate technology and knowledge in the field of generated energy supply and microgrids, which will subsequently enable their transfer to the industrial infrastructure in Navarre. Two electricity microgrids have already been thus installed: one, at the CENER Head Office on the Rocaforte industrial estate in Sangesa, Navarre; the other is on the Arrosadia Campus of the UPNA.
Microgrids even for cities
Microgrids are defined as a series of electrical loads, elements of generated power supply (wind, photovoltaic, fuel cell, microturbine, etc.) and storage elements (batteries, hydrogen, inertia wheel, compressed air, supercondensers, etc.) which, connected to the electric grid by means of a single point of connection, are all linked through a strategy which manages both the flow of energy within the grid as well as the interchange of power with the general supply grid. In this way, microgrids with single family dwellings, offices, industrial estates, blocks of flats, neighbourhoods or even cities can be established.
Of the two microgrids in the project, that of the UPNA, located at the Renewable Energy Laboratory of its Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, is aimed at generic applications and enables emulating and managing various profiles for power generation and consumption, such as single family dwellings, office buildings and small industries. It also includes the capacity to manage, in a co-ordinated manner, thermal systems that normally exist in these types of applications (heating, refrigeration and hot running water), thus forming, in the widest sense, an electrothermal microgrid. Its maximum renewable generated power is 20 kW, obtained from a wind-powered source (a wind turbine) and another photovoltaic one. Involving generator elements that can be managed, it has a 25 kW power generating set and a 5 kW fuel cell system. As regards storage, it has a 72 kWh bank of batteries, a 35.2 Nm3 hydrogen storage system and a bank of 83 F and 194 V supercondensers. The Public University of Navarre (UPNA) and CENER (National Centre for Renewable Energy) are taking part in a joint research project on renewable energy and based on electricity microgrids which enable enhancing energy efficiency, reducing contaminant emissions, increasing safety in supply and minimising electricity losses. The project is co-financed by the Government of Navarre, and by the European Union through its FEDER Funds.
The project, known as "Design, development and implementation of microgrids in Navarre", aims to generate technology and knowledge in the field of generated energy supply and microgrids, which will subsequently enable their transfer to the industrial infrastructure in Navarre. Two electricity microgrids have already been thus installed: one, at the CENER Head Office on the Rocaforte industrial estate in Sangesa, Navarre; the other is on the Arrosadia Campus of the UPNA.
Microgrids even for cities
Microgrids are defined as a series of electrical loads, elements of generated power supply (wind, photovoltaic, fuel cell, microturbine, etc.) and storage elements (batteries, hydrogen, inertia wheel, compressed air, supercondensers, etc.) which, connected to the electric grid by means of a single point of connection, are all linked through a strategy which manages both the flow of energy within the grid as well as the interchange of power with the general supply grid. In this way, microgrids with single family dwellings, offices, industrial estates, blocks of flats, neighbourhoods or even cities can be established.
Of the two microgrids in the project, that of the UPNA, located at the Renewable Energy Laboratory of its Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, is aimed at generic applications and enables emulating and managing various profiles for power generation and consumption, such as single family dwellings, office buildings and small industries. It also includes the capacity to manage, in a co-ordinated manner, thermal systems that normally exist in these types of applications (heating, refrigeration and hot running water), thus forming, in the widest sense, an electrothermal microgrid. Its maximum renewable generated power is 20 kW, obtained from a wind-powered source (a wind turbine) and another photovoltaic one. Involving generator elements that can be managed, it has a 25 kW power generating set and a 5 kW fuel cell system. As regards storage, it has a 72 kWh bank of batteries, a 35.2 Nm3 hydrogen storage system and a bank of 83 F and 194 V supercondensers. GENEVA/CHICAGO (Reuters) - The world of science was upended last year when an experiment appeared to show one of Einstein's fundamental theories was wrong - but now the lab behind it says the result could have been caused by a loose cable.
Physicists at the CERN research institute near Geneva appeared to contradict Albert Einstein's 1905 Special Theory of Relativity last year when they reported that sub-atomic particles called neutrinos could travel fractions of a second faster than light.
Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity, which underpins the current view of how the universe works, says that nothing can travel faster than light, and doing so would be like traveling back in time.
James Gillies, a spokesman for European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, said on Wednesday the lab's startling result was now in doubt.
Earlier on Wednesday, ScienceInsider, a website run by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, reported that the surprising result was down to a loose fibre optic cable linking a Global Positioning System satellite receiver to a computer.
Gillies confirmed that a flaw in the GPS system was now suspected as a possible cause for the surprising reading. Further testing was needed before any definite conclusions could be reached, he added.
The faster-than-light finding was recorded when 15,000 neutrino beams were pumped over three years from CERN to an underground Italian laboratory at Gran Sasso near Rome.
"A possible explanation has been found. But we won't know until we have tested it out with a new beam to Gran Sasso," Gillies told Reuters in Geneva.
Physicists on the experiment, called OPERA, said when they reported it last September that they had checked and rechecked over many months anything that could have produced a misreading before announcing what they had found.
A second test whose results were announced in November appeared to provide further evidence that neutrinos were travelling faster than light. But many experts remained skeptical of a result that would have overturned one of the fundamental principles of modern physics.
Edward Blucher, chairman of the Department of Physics at the University of Chicago, said the original finding would have been breathtaking if it had been true. As it was, the research inspired many spirited discussions, if few believers.
"I don't think I met anyone who said I bet it's going to be true. I think the people on the experiment worked as carefully as they could and I think they ran out of ideas of what could be wrong and they decided to present it," he said.
"Maybe they should have waited a few more months," he added.
Gillies said CERN would be issuing a full statement early on Thursday.
