American Idol Bikini Girl, Katrina Darrell, Arrested for DUI

Katrina Darrell, the American Idol contestant who rose to prominence in 2009 when she auditioned in a bikini and clashed with judge Kara DioGuardi, has been arrested for DUI.

As first reported by TMZ, Darrell was pulled over in Pomona at 12:16 am.m. PST today and allegedly told police she was on her way to a local hospital because her mom - who was sitting shotgun - had fallen down and injured herself.

The police let her go as a result... but she then ran a red light and crashed into another car!

The former Idol hopeful tried to flee the scene, was pulled over again by cops who smelled alcohol on her breath and proceeded to fail a field sobriety test by blowing somewhere between .15 and .17, twice the legal limit in California.

Sources say Darrell was crying throughout the ordeal and released around 6 a.m. from the police station. She may also face charges for the aforementioned hit-and-run.

All this AND our readers believe DioGuardi looks better in a bikini! Ouch.

Dead stars 'to guide spacecraft'

Spacecraft could one day navigate through the cosmos using a particular type of dead star as a kind of GPS.

German scientists are developing a technique that allows for very precise positioning anywhere in space by picking up X-ray signals from pulsars.

These dense, burnt-out stars rotate rapidly, sweeping their emission across the cosmos at rates that are so stable they rival atomic clock performance.

This timing property is perfect for interstellar navigation, says the team.

If a spacecraft carried the means to detect the pulses, it could compare their arrival times with those predicted at a reference location. This would enable the craft to determine its position to an accuracy of just five kilometres anywhere in the galaxy.

"The principle is so simple that it will definitely have applications," said Prof Werner Becker from the Max-Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Garching.

"These pulsars are everywhere in the Universe and their flashing is so predictable that it makes such an approach really straightforward," he told BBC News.

Prof Becker has been describing his team's research here at the UK National Astronomy Meeting in Manchester.

The proposed technique is very similar to that employed in the popular Global Positioning System, which broadcasts timing signals to the user from a constellation of satellites in orbit.

But GPS only works on, or just above, the Earth so it has no use beyond our planet.

Currently, mission controllers wanting to work out the position of their spacecraft deep in the Solar System will study the differences in time radio communications take to travel to and from the satellite. It is a complex process and requires several antennas dotted across the Earth.

It is also a technique that is far from precise, and the errors increase the further away the probe moves.

For the most distant spacecraft still in operation - Nasa's Voyager satellites, which are now approaching the very edge of the Solar System, some 18 billion km away - the errors associated with their positions are on the order of several hundred km.

Stellar beacons for navigation

  • Pulsars are a type of neutron star
  • Produced in huge stellar explosions
  • Remnant core is highly magnetised
  • Radiation focused into intense beams
  • Beams sweep around as dead star spins
  • Pulsars appear like ticks to observer
  • Stability of ticks rivals atomic clocks

Even for a probe at the reasonably short separation of Mars, the positioning uncertainty can be about 10km.

It is unlikely though that navigation by pulsar beacon will find immediate use.

The telescope hardware for detecting X-rays in space has traditionally been bulky and heavy.

Engineers will need to miniaturise the technology to make a practical pulsar navigation unit.

"It becomes possible with the development of lightweight X-ray mirrors," said Prof Becker.

"These are on the way for the next generation of X-ray telescopes. Current mirrors have a 100 times more weight and would be completely unusable.

"In 15-20 years, the new mirrors will be standard and our device will be ready to be built."

The scientist believes his navigation solution will certainly find use on Solar System probes, providing autonomous navigation for interplanetary missions and perhaps for future manned ventures to Mars where high performance systems will be an absolute requirement for safety reasons.

But he also likes the idea of humanity one day pushing out across interstellar space.

"You know for GPS that if you go to another country, you have to buy the maps for your device. Well, we were joking with our students in Garching about selling maps for different galaxies for ships like Enterprise [on Star Trek]."

Career advice: From 'tech manager' to 'info leader' | Nicosia ...

You know your way around the data centre. Your staff respect you and it?s largely safe to walk among the users without fear of assault. By industry standards, you run a tight ship. However, a couple of things are niggling you, writes Ade McCormack:
?You rarely get involved in strategic business decisions.
?The chief executive still calls you first when their laptop is broken.

Where does this leave your career?

The reason you are not included in strategic business decision-making is for much the same reason the catering manager is not invited to board meetings. You are both seen as operationally important, but not strategically significant.

Despite the wisdom you will have accrued as to how technologies can and do change business models for the better, you cannot get the senior management team?s attention.

In fact, the last time you tried, the chief finance officer looked at you as if you were a supermarket check-out assistant offering lifestyle and wealth management advice. You are seen as first-line support ? a view reinforced by the fact that more IT elements can now be bought in packaged form, which means the amount of software development has dropped considerably. The creative aspects of IT are disappearing and what remains are the handle-turning procedural elements of IT management.

The ?cloud? ? aka the internet ? is taking this to the extreme, enabling users, in effect, to hire a virtualised IT function via the web. So it would appear that the writing is on the wall for IT managers.

This is not totally true, however. Some aspects of your in-house portfolio of IT services do not lend themselves to a cloud-based model. Cloud vendors might focus on services that deliver the greatest financial return and so will avoid niche, complex or legacy systems ? these will remain your responsibility.

But overall, the bad news is that end-user IT departments are dying. The good news is, of course, that IT departments are dying. Because it?s not about technology management any more. Users don?t want technology per se, they want what technology can give them, ie information, knowledge and even wisdom.

While it might be a few years before I can convince the market to talk about the IT industry morphing to the IKW (Information, Knowledge, Wisdom) industry, I believe this is what is happening. The interesting end of the digital services world is becoming the provision of technologies that help people make better decisions through better business intelligence (sweat the database) and effective collaborative tools (sweat the staff).

Smart IT managers with genuine CIO aspirations are thus advised to take the following steps:
?Decouple yourself from technology. By all means let people know you are digitally alert, but suppress tech jargon when talking to the users.
?Express all request and reporting in terms of the organisation?s strategic imperatives.
?Embrace the cloud. The sooner you outsource technology management the sooner you can focus on value-adding information and collaboration services.
?Pay great attention to your brand. Read up on brand management.
?Build credibility with the users by taking a sabbatical on the user side. A stint in sales or finance will equip you with the skills needed not just to be on the senior management team, but one day to lead it.
?You know you are intelligent. In fact you know you can reason someone to death if necessary. But possibly your intelligence is more IQ than emotional intelligence. Consider whether you need to work on your softer side.
?If you are going to become a senior player in the organisation, you need to ensure that you have the political skills to remain a senior player. Forming alliances with the powerful starts with knowing who the powerful are and what they see of value in you.
?Treat your IT function as if you were a customer. This again positions you as a consumer of IT services rather than a provider. Your focus is on innovative ways to lever information to achieve strategic objectives.
?Look for land grab opportunities that extend your influence. You could become chief energy officer, chief property officer, and chief business process officer, to name a few.

Mindlessly applying for CIO roles would be akin to following your fellow lemmings off a cliff. Be aware that organisations need their CIOs to be leaders. As someone moving up through the ranks you can steer your personal development in a manner that meets the need of employers today and tomorrow. In a post industrial digital economy, we need information leaders rather than IT managers.

Man United beats Fulham to take 3-point lead

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:06 p.m. ET March 26, 2012

MANCHESTER, England (AP) -Wayne Rooney sent Manchester United three points clear in the Premier League on Monday, scoring a first-half goal in a 1-0 victory over Fulham to earn the reigning champions their sixth straight league win.

The England striker ensured United capitalized on title rival Manchester City's 1-1 draw at Stoke on Saturday by stroking home a close-range winner high into the net in the 42nd minute at Old Trafford, his 21st league goal of the season.

With only eight games left in the campaign and what appears an easier run-in than City, Alex Ferguson's side is now the favorite to extend its record haul of English titles to 20 at the expense of one of its fiercest rivals.

"It's a good position to be in but it's not decisive," Ferguson said. "It's a good game for us tonight - that's what it will be like for us for the rest of the season."

From a position of total authority, United endured some nervous moments in the final 10 minutes and could have conceded a late penalty when Michael Carrick appeared to bundle over midfield counterpart Danny Murphy in the area.

"I think everyone in the stadium expected a penalty, to be honest," Fulham manager Martin Jol said. "But you have to be brave to give a penalty at Old Trafford."

United should have been well clear by then, with Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer producing wonderful saves to deny wingers Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia at the start of the second half.

"For an hour, we played very well," Ferguson said. "The disappointing thing was that we never finished them off."

Rooney has found his scoring form just at the right time for United, his goal taking his tally in the last nine games in all competitions to 11.

He is now just five goals behind Arsenal striker Robin van Persie in the Premier League's goalscoring charts and the same amount away from equaling his record league haul in one season.

The goal was avoidable from Fulham's point of view, with left back John Arne Riise failing to clear a cross from the left by the recalled Young.

United defender Jonny Evans, who had come upfield for a corner, stabbed the ball back across goal for Rooney to stroke into the net from the edge of the six-yard box.

It was United's fifth 1-0 win of the campaign and extended its unbeaten league run to 10 matches, nine of which have been wins in a typically strong finish to the season that has become the club's trademark under Ferguson.

"It's a great result for us but we are disappointed with the performance," said Evans, whose center-half partner Rio Ferdinand came off in the 74th minute with stiffness in his back.

Save for a couple of shots from distance by top scorer Clint Dempsey, 13th-place Fulham - which came into the game with the joint-worst away record in the league and with just one win at Old Trafford since 1959 - had been on the back foot up until Rooney's goal although United hadn't created any genuine chances.

The second half was even more one-sided, with Valencia drawing a point-blank save in the 47th from Schwarzer, who then also saved well from Young's curling shot.

With goal difference potentially a factor in the run-in, United poured forward in a bid to trim City's three-goal advantage, bringing on Mexico striker Javier Hernandez in the 63rd minute.

Ryan Giggs dragged an effort wide from the edge of the box, before Schwarzer produced a stunning double save to twice deny the lively Young.

Fulham had its moments toward the end of the match, Dempsey just failing to get a touch to Murphy's floated through-ball with only United goalkeeper David De Gea to beat.

With the home side becoming increasingly nervous and lax in possession, Murphy ghosted into the box and fell under pressure from the retreating Carrick. Referee Michael Oliver ignored Fulham's protests and United survived.

Android Central international round-up - March 24, 2012

LloydAs we published our definitive review of the Sony Xperia S, many of the week's main stories focused on two highly-anticipated unreleased devices -- the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S III.

Earlier reports of an April 5 launch for HTC's new One series were apparently confirmed by news of a launch party in Paris that evening. And we saw a couple more dubious images claiming to show Samsung's next big thing. And towards the end of the week, we got a first look at the Samsung GT-i9300, a buttonless mystery device running Ice Cream Sandwich and TouchWiz.

In software update news, the roll-out of Android 4.0 for the Samsung Galaxy S II continued, and news arrived of an upcoming "premium suite" for the international Galaxy Note, including new stylus apps, ICS and Angry Birds Space.

Check some highlights from past week's Android developments in Europe, Asia and beyond in the list below. And if you've got international news, be sure to tip us at the usual address.

Syrian troops bomb towns, kill rebels

Syrian forces have bombed towns and clashed with rebels in several regions as thousands staged anti-regime protests and the European Union slapped sanctions on the country's First Lady.

In Geneva on Friday, the UN Human Rights Council ordered a probe into violations in Syria to be extended, asking investigators to map out abuses since a deadly crackdown on protests in the country erupted in March 2011.

UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan was to travel this weekend to Moscow and Beijing, the two countries that have blocked Security Council action against Syria over the crackdown.

But he had no immediate plans to return to Damascus.

Adding to pressure on the regime, the EU on Friday agreed to sanction President Bashar al-Assad's glamorous British-born wife Asma, along with his mother, sister and sister-in-law.

Diplomats in Brussels said EU foreign ministers had agreed on an assets freeze and travel ban on the four women and eight other members of Assad's entourage.

Asma Assad, whose parents live in Britain where she grew up, cannot be barred entry to the country, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said.

"But given that we are imposing an asset freeze on all of these individuals and a travel ban on other members of the same family and the regime, we are not expecting Mrs Assad to try to travel to the United Kingdom at the moment."

Assad himself was targeted last May 10, along with his younger brother Maher and four cousins.

Washington welcomed the EU's decision.

"We are gratified that the EU has taken yet another step in tightening the noose on the Assad regime," US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

US Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced that Syrians in the United States would be allowed to stay beyond their visas and avoid the risk of returning to their violence-torn country.

Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators turned out on Friday in the hot spots of anti-regime revolt across Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

At least 33 people were killed in violence nationwide, the Britain-based group said, including 17 civilians, 13 soldiers and three army deserters.

Nine civilians died in districts in Homs hit by gunfire and rockets, it reported.

At least three deserters and a civilian were reported killed in fighting between regime forces and army deserters in Aazaz in the northern province of Aleppo near the Turkish border, the Observatory and activists said.

"Troops are bombing and helicopters flying overhead," activist Mohammed Halabi told AFP in Beirut by telephone from the province. The fighting had been going on since midday on Thursday, he said.

Aazaz, strategically positioned on the road to neighbouring Turkey, is a supply route for Free Syrian Army rebels.

Fierce clashes also erupted mid-afternoon between soldiers and deserters in the villages of Haritan and Anadan, between Aleppo and Aazaz, Halabi said. The Observatory said two civilians were killed in Anadan.

Troops shelled the two villages after deserters attacked a convoy of tanks headed for Aazaz, the activist said.

The state news agency SANA reported "several terrorists" killed in the Sermin region of Idlib and said a bomb under a bridge had killed an army engineer in the Aleppo region.

Videos posted online by activists showed protests in the southern province of Daraa, birthplace of the revolt that monitors say has cost more than 9100 lives.

UN human rights expert Yakin Erturk, meanwhile, told reporters in New York on Friday that at least four Syrian brigadier generals had defected in recent weeks.

In diplomatic efforts to halt the bloodshed, the Security Council on Wednesday adopted a statement urging Assad and his foes to implement "fully and immediately" Annan's peace plan.

The initiative calls for Assad to pull troops and heavy weapons out of protest hubs, a daily two-hour humanitarian ceasefire, access to all areas affected by the fighting and a UN-supervised halt to all clashes.

The opposition Syrian National Council poured scorn on the UN statement, saying it would give the regime more time to continue killing its own people.

Various Home-Improvement Issues To Protect Yourself From ...

It is easy to get caught up with the big things when planning a home improvement project. The reason that many of them fail is that we forget about the details. Our project may not be done properly if we are not careful. Sometimes, however, small details that we overlook become big problems. Those are the lessons we all tend to never forget, and it just depends on the nature of the consequences. Problems like this typically are the result of ill formed mannerisms. Let?s take a look at some common home improvement issues we often see.

Whenever doing home improvements, you must think about safety. Every year there are all too many people who get hurt in falls and accidents while doing the simplest of tasks around the house. A couple of simple precautions could one day prevent an accident, even though you may get tired of doing them. When working with power tools, extra precautions should be taken when changing out parts or pieces, be sure to unplug the tool before making any changes to the tool. Many people regrettably skip this all too important safety step. Extra care should always be taken around circular saws. You can use a piece of hose and cut it open, then wrap the blade edges with it. In executing home repairs, it is very important to have the strength that your whole body needs. You can consider taking protein shakes for women to maintain your energy to the optimum level. Using a ladder comes with risk. Minimize the risks associated with ladder usage. Ladders should be inspected before you climb up them. You never know if any cracks have formed since the last time you used it. If you have a folding ladder, then always ensure that you open the ladder to the fullest amount possible. Prior to climbing up the ladder, make sure the metal braces, which hold the ladder open, are locked.

If you want to make a dated room look fresh and new, paint the walls! Painting is one of the cheapest home improvement jobs you can do. Don?t put of painting! Commit to getting the job done and then do it! If you have decided to tackle a painting job, again keep safety in mind. Protect yourself against paint fumes. Inexpensive painter?s masks are always a good idea when working indoors. For anyone sensitive to fumes or with respiratory issues, get a better mask such as a filtering mask. A mask like this will have replaceable cartridges. Even the neatest of painters aren?t immune from paint splatter. Consider protecting your eyes. A cheap pair of safety glasses is really all that is need to protect the eyes from paint splatter. They are typically hard plastic and can be found at any good hardware store.

Many times people get hurt because they do not want to take the time to do something they know they should do. If more people would think about their safety, fewer people would be hurt.

Various Types of Pest Control Methods Which You Can Utilize at ...

?

Homeowners have the capacity to put an end to pest infestation. It is a fact that we value our property and all the individuals that are living inside. That's why, we have to be sure that they are well protected and well looked after. Pest infestation can happen almost anywhere. With many different species of pests that can invade residence, you just cannot afford not to undertake the right pest control procedures. So in order for you to have an idea about the different approaches, here is a list which you can consider on employing whenever you have an existing pest issue.

Exclusion - This technique is achieved by applying screens and caulking cracks or crevices that are found in the area. The primary objective is to seal any possible access points in which the animals can go through and reduce their chances of infiltrating the area.

Traps - These are kinds of equipment that capture mobile or active creatures.

If placed properly, these devices can help regulate the number of invaders that are wandering around the area. These are typically applied in order to catch mice, possums, raccoons and even rabbits.

Mechanical Control - Rolled newspapers or magazines and fly swatters are some tools which can be used in eliminating insects and other bugs. This is useful, especially if you do not have an available insect spray which can be used immediately after having a pest encounter.

Temperature Control - Artificially adjusting the environment's temperature where pests are dwelling is a type of an inexpensive non-chemical strategy.

This is achieved by subjecting the infested garments, carpets and foods to an extremely hot or cold temperature. Pantry pests, carpet beetles and cloth moths can be eradicated through this technique. Remember that the time from treatment to death of a pest and the amount of pests that are destroyed in the process varies with the duration of exposure as well as pest stage. But normally, these kinds of critters can be easily killed within minutes or hours when subjected to temperatures below 32? F and above 104? F, respectively.

Chemical Agents - These substances should be used with precaution and before attempting to use it at home, be sure that you have called the right pest control service to help you with the process. As you know, these chemical substances are not only harmful to pests but are also dangerous to human health in general. That's why, you need to exercise safety precaution before starting the procedure and make sure that everyone had left the area to avoid any chemical exposure.

Maintaining Cleanliness - Keeping your house clean is the most economical and the most effective type of pest control. Clearing the place from any food source, still water and possible shelter can help prevent these creatures from attacking your residence. These elements are the ones they need in order to support their survival and if you can eliminate these, you can ultimately lessen their attraction to your premises.

If you want to make sure that your property is free from any annoying animals, you can always contact a reliable pest control service to help you achieve this aim. They can supply you with a specific pest control technique that is appropriate for your situation. Just remember to discuss any of your concerns with the specialist and do not think twice to ask about the underlying conditions in every technique. This way, you will have a concept as to what type you should opt for and you will become knowledgeable about the ways in performing a pest control operation.

Mexico earthquake: How quake-prone is the region?

Mexico earthquake history shows that the same faults that caused Tuesday's Mexico earthquake can produce even bigger events, like one that struck in 1985.

Authorities in Mexico are surveying that damage following a magnitude 7.4 quake that struck the country just after noon on Tuesday local time.

The quake was centered some 31 miles north-northeast of the city of Ometepec, in a mountainous region dotted with villages. The rupture occurred at a depth of about 12 miles, according to estimates from the US Geological Survey's Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo.

Given the size of the quake, the population density, the types of buildings in the area, and factors affecting the intensity of shaking, analysts at the center said the quake had the potential to cause up to $100 million in damage and lead to as many as 100 fatalities.

So far, however, no deaths or injuries have been reported. But damage estimates are trickling out from the area. Officials in the town of Igualapa told CNN that more than 800 homes have collapsed. In Ometepec, local officials told the network that roughly half of the homes were heavily damaged.

Shaking from the quake, initially estimated at magnitude 7.9, also was felt in Mexico City, some 200 miles away, sending residents into the streets. According to data from the USGS's ?Did You Feel It?? program, people in 14 cities throughout the country and beyond reported that they'd experienced some level of shaking from the temblor. The quake was felt as far away as Guatemala City.

Seismologists have traced the quake to a release of strain associated with a subduction zone that runs up the west coast of Central America and Mexico and stops short of the southern tip of Baja California.

Here, the oceanic crust of the Cocos plate is sliding northeastward under the more buoyant rock of the North American plate ? at a pace of some 60 millimeters a year.

The action of the two plates, along with a tiny plate known as the Rivera plate at the northern end of the subduction zone, is responsible for a chain of volcanoes that have formed across the country mainly along a west-to-east line that runs near Mexico City to within about 70 miles of the country's Gulf coast.

In 1985, a segment of the Cocos-North American subduction zone ruptured off of Acapulco, triggering a magnitude 8.1 quake that flattened apartment buildings in Mexico City, killing some 4,000 people.

Top 5 nations that use renewable energy

Solar, wind, tidal and geothermal energy made up only 1.3 percent of total global energy use in 2011, but that's up 15.5 percent from the previous year. This is increasing due to policy and private investment, as well as commitments to reduce environmental impact and dependence on foreign energy sources. Here are the top five countries which are making use of renewable energy.

- Leigh Montgomery,?Staff Writer

Renowned for its biofuel production, Brazil is also involved with developing technologies such as solar water heating, and for relationships with countries outside its region, such as China. Brazil boosted large investments into the wind sector through government auctions for contracts since introducing them in 2009.? Brazil seeks to further renewable development and burnish its green credentials through supporting and attracting foreign investment into solar energy - as well as a pledge to have solar power in all twelve venues for the 2014 World Cup.

BUTTE, Mont. (AP) ? Ruby Garrett ran the last brothel standing in this mining town's once-lively red-light district with a reputation for kindness toward her girls, but the grandmotherly figure was also a husband-shooting, tax-evading madam who once said that prostitution should be considered a commodity.

The first time Garrett went to prison, it was for shooting her husband five times in the middle of a card game in 1959. She killed him, she said, because he had abused her repeatedly.

She went to prison again in 1982 for failing to report her earnings. While she was investigated, the sheriff padlocked the doors of the Dumas Hotel in late 1981, marking the end of the brothel that had catered to the miners in the Montana boomtown since 1890.

Butte's last madam died Saturday at Crest Nursing Home at the age of 94, the Duggan-Dolan Mortuary confirmed Tuesday. The cause of her death was not immediately known.

Garrett, also known as Lee Arrigoni, told the Montana Standard in 1991 that prostitution should be considered a commodity instead of being morally wrong.

"If you don't think it's morally wrong, then it's kind of fun," she told the Butte newspaper.

The ex-madam, then in her mid-70s, even had advice for the next generation of women: "These little chippies who will do it for a burger and a beer, I say they might as well sell it."

People who knew Garrett in her later years remembered a kind person who looked out for the women who worked at the Dumas. Ellen Crain, director of the Butte-Silver Bow Archives, said Garrett was a savvy businesswoman who felt strongly about treating the women well and took pride in keeping the brothel clean and orderly.

"She was truly one of the last living legends in Butte, from the end of Butte's famed red light district," said Chris Fisk, a Butte High School history teacher who met Garrett two years ago.

Former Sheriff Bob Butorovich, who shut down the brothel, said prostitution became a fact of life in Butte with so many young, single miners. He said Garrett never held a grudge against him for closing down her establishment.

"She was a wonderful old gal," he said. "Part of Butte history is gone."

She lived in the little town of Divide, south of Butte, and her friends and neighbors were protective of her. The day before she began her six-month prison term in 1982, they threw her a party at the Melrose Bar.

Les Baldwin, one of those who turned out to bid her farewell, told an Associated Press reporter at the party: "I think it's a crime that a fine woman like this is sent to prison. I've done more things wrong than this woman."

Garrett was acquitted of a first-degree murder charge for shooting common-law husband Andy Arrigoni but served nine months for the shooting on a manslaughter conviction. Garrett had said that he beat her, and Crain said she was a domestic-violence victim.

"She was beaten so bad that day that when she walked in that Board of Trade to shoot him, they couldn't recognize her," Crain said.

Garrett pleaded guilty in 1982 to failing to failing to pay $51,670 in federal taxes from 1975 to 1978. She received a six-month sentence and was fined $10,000, which she said she paid with a loan from a friend.

Garrett had refused to sell the Dumas unless it could be used as a brothel, news reports said at the time. It's now a tourist attraction in Uptown Butte.

Garrett made no apologies for what she did, but she told the Montana Standard that she would have made some different decisions if she could do it over again. She was raised a Catholic, sang in the church choir and prayed regularly, she said.

"I don't think I would have become a nun or a Sister, but I would have done some things different," Garrett told the newspaper.

Services were pending with Duggan-Dolan Mortuary.

Vikings' cargo included stowaway mice

Between the eighth and 10th centuries, Vikings were exploring and spreading into Greenland, Iceland and Newfoundland. Now, a new study finds that these notoriously fierce people brought with them some fluffy stowaways: house mice.

Vikings appear to have brought the house mice with them when they arrived in Iceland and Greenland, according to a genetic analysis of the tiny rodents. The descendents of these Viking mice can still be found today in Iceland, though the Greenland mice died out and were replaced by their Danish cousins.

"Human settlement history over the last 1,000 years is reflected in the genetic sequence of mouse mitochondrial DNA," said study researcher Eleanor Jones of the University of York and Uppsala University in a statement, referring to DNA found in mitochondria, or the energy-producing centers of cells. "We can match the pattern of human populations to that of the house mice."

Like many explorers, Vikings brought along livestock on their expeditions. On such journeys, uninvited tagalongs are inevitable. Jones and her colleagues conducted genetic testing on modern mice in Iceland, Greenland and northwest Newfoundland where Vikings are known to have explored. They also tested old mouse bones found at archaeological sites in Greenland and Iceland.

They found that the house mouse subspecies Mus musculus domesticus showed up in Iceland from Norway or the North British Isles in the 10th century ? matching the time period of the Vikings' arrival. From there, the Vikings and their mice went to Greenland.

Today, the descendents of these Viking mice are still found in Iceland. But for reasons unknown, Mus musculus domesticus would later die out in Greenland, the researchers reported Monday in the journal BMC Evolutionary Biology. Today, the mice in Greenland are Mus musculus muscularis, a subspecies that likely came from Denmark during expeditions after A.D. 1500 or later, after the country colonized Greenland in the 1700s.

The researchers found no evidence of Viking mice in Newfoundland, despite the likely presence of a Viking settlement there around A.D. 1000. It's possible that the Vikings did inadvertently bring mice to the area, the researchers suggest, but the mice may have died out when the Vikings moved on. Mice can sometimes survive in wild populations, the researchers wrote, but they often depend on human villages or cities as their habitat. Today's Newfoundland mice are a subspecies that spread all across the world during the 1700s on British sailing ships.?
