Supplementing children's diets with fish oil, enrolling them in quality preschool, and engaging them in interactive reading all turn out to be effective ways to raise a young child's intelligence, according to a new report published in Perspectives on Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

Using a technique called meta-analysis, a team led by John Protzko, a doctoral student at the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, combined the findings from existing studies to evaluate the overall effectiveness of each type of intervention. In collaboration with NYU Steinhardt professors Joshua Aronson and Clancy Blair, leaders in the field of intelligence, Protzko analyzed the best available studies involving samples of children from birth and kindergarten from their newlyassembled "Database of Raising Intelligence."

"Our aim in creating this database is to learn what works and what doesn't work to raise people's intelligence," said Protzko. "For too long, findings have been disconnected and scattered throughout a wide variety of journals. The broad consensus about what works is founded on only two or three very high-profile studies."

All of the studies in this database rely on a normal population (participants without clinical diagnoses of intellectual disabilities), focus on interventions that are sustained over time, use widely accepted measures of intelligence, and, most importantly, are randomly controlled trials (participants selected at random to receive one of the interventions).

"The larger goal here is to understand the nature of intelligence, and if and how it can be nurtured at every stage of development," said Aronson, Protzko's advisor. "This is just a first step in a long process of understanding. It is by no means the last word. In fact, one of the main conclusions is how little high quality research exists in the field and how much more needs to be done."

Overall, the results of the meta-analyses indicated that certain dietary and environmental interventions can be effective in raising children's IQ.

Supplementing pregnant women and newborns with long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, foods rich in Omega-3, were found to boost children's IQ by more than 3.5 points. These essential fatty acids may help raise intelligence by providing the building blocks for nerve cell development that the body cannot produce on its own.

There is insufficient research, however, to determine whether other types of supplements including iron, B-complex vitamins, riboflavin, thiamine, niacin, and zinc have beneficial effects on intelligence.

Enrolling an economically disadvantaged child into an early education intervention was found to raise his or her IQ by more than four points; interventions that specifically included a center-based education component raised a child's IQ by more than seven points.

The researchers hypothesize that early education interventions may help to raise children's IQ by increasing their exposure to complex environments that are cognitively stimulating and demanding. It's not clear, however, whether these results apply more broadly to kids from different socioeconomic backgrounds.

Surprisingly, Protzko, Aronson, and Blair found no evidence to support the idea that early education interventions that take place earlier in childhood are more effective than those that begin later.

Interventions focused on interactive reading teaching parents how to engage their children while reading with them were found to raise children's IQ by over 6 points. These interventions do not seem to have an effect for children over 4 years old, suggesting that the interventions may accelerate language development, which, in turn, boosts IQ.

Sending a child to preschool was found to raise his or her IQ by more than four points, and preschools that include a language development component were found to boost IQ by more than seven points. The link between preschool and intelligence could be a function of increased exposure to language or the result of the overall cognitive complexity of the preschool environment.

"Our current findings strengthen earlier conclusions that complex environments build intelligence, but do cast doubt on others, including evidence that earlier interventions are always most effective," Protzko explained. "Overall, identifying the link between essential fatty acids and intelligence gives rise to tantalizing new questions for future research and we look forward to exploring this finding."

"Killing Lincoln," based on Bill O'Reilly book, gets air date from Nat Geo

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - "Killing Lincoln," the National Geographic Channel drama based on Bill O'Reilly's bestseller, will premiere February 17 at 8 p.m., the network said Thursday.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the debut, falls on Presidents Day weekend.

The film - which, according to the network, "thrillingly chronicles the final days of President Lincoln and the treasonous plot by one the most notorious, yet complex villains of all time" - stars Billy Campbell ("The Killing") as Lincoln and newcomer Jesse Johnson as his assassin, John Wilkes Booth.

Ridley and Tony Scott produced the project, with Tom Hanks hosting and narrating the two-hour film.

Following this U.S. premiere, and its 10 p.m. re-airing, the film will debut globally in 171 countries and 38 languages in March on the National Geographic Channel.

National Geographic is also working on an adaptation of O'Reilly's follow-up book, "Killing Kennedy: The End of Camelot," with Scott Free Productions once again producing.

Students treat robo-dogs at high-tech veterinary school

7 hrs.

Cornell University's Veterinary Center?is combining forces with their Center for Advanced Computing to create a powerful, futuristic simulated vet environment ? complete with robot dogs and cats. Students monitor, diagnose?and treat the robo-pets in a hands-on experience critical?for aspiring vets.

Anyone who has taken a first?aid course knows that simulated humans are a common thing, and there are similar practice?models for pets. But there's a difference between a rubber model you can do CPR on and something that behaves like a real person ? or dog.

That's what Cornell's?Dr.?Daniel Fletcher and his colleagues are attempting to do ? and not just with a better dog surrogate, but with a fully-functional model vet's office.

"The idea is to bridge preclinical lecture learning and actual clinical experience, letting students practice applying what?they've?learned in a safe setting before the stakes get high,"?explained Fletcher in a news release describing the research.

Over the last two years, the Veterinary Center has put together what must be the most sophisticated simulated vet's office in the world. Students can use real vet's tools to check the pulse, breathing, and other vital stats on a robot dog and cat (Robo-Jerry and Robo-Fluffy), and can practice doing injections and inserting catheters. Their work is recorded from multiple angles and can be reviewed later by professors and classmates.

As helpful as all this is, it's still only a fraction of the everyday duties and risks of a veterinarian. Fletcher told NBC News in an email that the current robo-dog is valuable but rudimentary. "It currently can't move to respond to stimulation, it can't bite to simulate a frightened pet for handling practicing, and has only simple physiologic feedback."

That's why he's working on Butch, successor to Robo-Jerry and bearer of many improvements. Fletcher says Butch will have more realistic skin and blood vessels, an improved airway, more space inside for electronics to simulate conditions, and articulating joints for a more authentic dog-like feel. It will also be based on cheaper, off-the-shelf components.

Inside, it's governed by a new open-source software system they call URSULA, which stands for Universal Realistic Simulation of a Living Animal. It will allow for more accurate simulation of animals' symptoms and response to treatments ? earlier software was based on human models, which were better than nothing but, as one might expect, highly inaccurate in some ways.

Fletcher cautioned that the vet center's?scope is limited:?"We're a small academic group, so progress is slow since we all have our regular responsibilities and are doing this as a side project."?

So while a robo-pig or robo-cow might be useful, don't expect one next year. But?the plan is to make the system publicly accessible, both so it can be used and so other academics can contribute. "We're really hoping that the open-source model will help move this along," Fletcher wrote ? "Only time will tell!"

Pentagon: AQ ally is top suspect in Algeria attack

(AP) ? The Pentagon on Tuesday stopped short of saying al-Qaida's North Africa affiliate is definitely to blame for the deadly Algeria terrorist attack, but it said there is good reason to believe the group had a leading role.

"When it comes to terrorist attacks of this sort in North Africa, AQIM has to be at the top of the list of suspects, I'll put it that way," said Pentagon press secretary George Little, referring to al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb.

The White House said the Obama administration is working with the Algerian government to learn more about what happened and did not echo concerns expressed by the British defense minister over the Algerian government's collaboration.

"We cannot lose sight of the fact that the blame for this lies with the terrorists," said White House press secretary Jay Carney.

Little told reporters there are "strong indications that AQIM, "had a hand" in the assault on an Algerian natural gas plant that left dozens of hostages and militants dead, but he would not be more specific.

"AQIM does what terrorist groups do ? they plan and carry out attacks. I'll leave it at that," he said.

The State Department has said three U.S. citizens were killed in last week's hostage standoff, while seven Americans made it out safely.

The State Department has not definitively declared that AQIM was responsible for the attack, but it has suggested the group played a leading role.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Tuesday the U.S. is consulting with Algerian government officials about who they believe was responsible for the attack.

"We don't have any reason to doubt AQIM's involvement in this attack," Nuland said, noting that the group has claimed responsibility.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has blamed the broader al-Qaida network.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton last week described a "continuing effort by the terrorists, whether they call themselves one name or al-Qaida, to try to destroy the stability, the peace and security, of the people of this region."

Neb. governor OKs Keystone XL route through state

(AP) ? Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman approved a new route for the Keystone XL oil pipeline on Tuesday that avoids the state's environmentally sensitive Sandhills region.

The Republican governor sent a letter to President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton saying he would allow the pipeline to proceed through his state.

His announcement came one day after Obama promised in his inauguration speech to tackle climate change during his second term. Pipeline opponents have urged the president to deny a federal permit for the project, which is required because the Canada-to-Texas pipeline crosses an international border. Obama rejected the original proposal for the pipeline last year and later agreed to let construction begin on a southern leg of the project starting in Cushing, Okla.

The project has faced some of its strongest resistance in Nebraska from a coalition of landowners and environmental groups that say it would contaminate the Ogallala aquifer, a massive groundwater supply. Canadian pipeline developer TransCanada and some unions say the project is safe and will create thousands of jobs.

Surveys commissioned by the University of Nebraska, independent polling firms and industry-backed groups have shown that most Nebraska residents support the project itself, but wanted a route that avoided both the Sandhills and the Ogallala aquifer. Public outrage over the original route prompted Heineman to call state lawmakers into a special session in 2011, but the issue hasn't gained as much traction in the Legislature after TransCanada agreed to keep the project out of an area that state officals designated as the Sandhills.

TransCanada's pipeline is designed to carry tar sands oil from Canada across Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. The company also has proposed connecting it to the Bakken oil field in Montana and North Dakota.

The original Nebraska route would have run the pipeline through a region of erodible, grass-covered sand dunes known as the Sandhills. Heineman said in his letter that the new, 195-mile route through Nebraska avoids the Sandhills but would still cross over a small part of the aquifer.

The pipeline's most vocal critics remain firmly opposed to the project.

"Gov. Heineman just performed one of the biggest flip-flops that we've seen in Nebraska political history," said Jane Kleeb, executive director of the group Bold Nebraska.

Heineman has previously said he would oppose any pipeline route that endangered the aquifer. In his letter to federal officials, Heineman said any spills along the new route would be localized, and any cleanup responsibilities would fall to TransCanada. He also said the project would result in $418.1 million in economic benefits for the state, plus $16.5 million in state tax revenue from the pipeline construction materials.

Kleeb said those estimates came from a study commissioned by TransCanada that included job-creation numbers which have since been debunked. The report done by the Perryman Group originally claimed that project would create 20,000 jobs, but estimates later used by the State Department said the project would create 5,000 to 6,000 construction jobs during the roughly two years it would take to build the pipeline.

Those favoring the Keystone XL project, including such organizations as Americans for Prosperity, the Consumer Energy Alliance and Nebraskans for Jobs and Energy Independence, have cited the nation's need for more oil and praised its potential economic impact.

Heineman said TransCanada has assured state environmental officials that the company would create an emergency response plan in case of a spill and would test water wells at landowners' request.

TransCanada executives have said the company will build a pipeline with rigorous safeguards and carry $200 million in third-party liability insurance to cover cleanup costs in Nebraska. TransCanada CEO and President Russ Girling said Tuesday that the project had passed a strict review and would help national security.

"The need for Keystone XL continues to grow stronger as North American oil production increases, and having the right infrastructure in place is critical to meet the goal of reducing dependence on foreign oil," Girling said in the statement. "Keystone XL is the most studied cross-border pipeline ever proposed, and it remains in America's national interests to approve a pipeline that will have a minimal impact on the environment."

Canadian officials also cheered the announcement.

"As we have repeatedly said, the Keystone XL Pipeline will create thousands of jobs on both sides of the border ? including 140,000 in Canada," said Andrew MacDougall, a spokesman for Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Canada exports most of its oil to the U.S. and needs a way to move its growing oil sands production from northern Alberta, which has more than 170 billion barrels of proven reserves. Daily production of 1.5 million barrels from the oil sands is expected to increase to 3.7 million in 2025. Only Saudi Arabia and Venezuela have more reserves.

Pipeline opponents are still challenging a Nebraska pipeline-siting law that was written as part of a deal to let state officials review the project. The plaintiffs ? a group of Nebraska landowners opposed to the project ? say they are concerned that a pipeline company could use the state power of eminent domain to obtain land for a project. A judge has allowed the lawsuit to proceed in court.

Editor gets 10 years in jail for Thai royal insult

BANGKOK (AP) ? A prominent Thai labor rights activist and magazine editor was sentenced to a decade in prison Wednesday for violating much-debated laws designed to protect Thailand's royal family.

The verdict came despite repeated calls by rights groups to free Somyot Pruksakasemsuk, who has been jailed since 2011. It also underscored the harsh nature of Thailand's lese majeste laws, which have been criticized as a violation of free speech.

The articles in question were published under pseudonyms in Somyot's now-defunct Voice of Taksin magazine, which he launched in 2009 to compile political news and anti-establishment articles from writers and contributors.

Judges found both articles in question contained content that defamed the royal family and argued that Somyot, as a veteran editor, knew that and chose to print the stories anyway. The court handed down two five-year jail terms ? one for each story.

Somyot said he would appeal the verdict but would not seek a royal pardon.

Although Somyot's articles were published in 2010, he was only arrested the following year after launching a petition drive to revoke Article 112 of the nation's criminal code, which mandates three to 15 years in jail for "whoever defames, insults or threatens the king, the queen, the heir to the throne or the regent."

"The courts seem to have adopted the role of chief protector of the monarchy at the expense of free expression rights," Brad Adams, Asia director of Human Rights Watch, said in a statement. "The court's ruling appears to be more about Somyot's strong support for amending the lese majeste law than about any harm incurred by the monarchy."

Let?s start with some basic definitions:

An LLC is a legal entity that limits the liability of owners from liability found with the company. With the LLC, there are no shares. An LLC does not file separate taxes, either; all company profits flow through to the owners and are taxed at the personal income rate. It?s great for businesses that want liability protection but minimal formality?the LLC is free of much of the legal requirements and red tape that govern corporations, such as director meetings, shareholder requirements, etc.

The LLP is a general partnership where partners enjoy some level of protection from personal liability. Similar to the LLC, the LLP is a hybrid of both the corporation and partnership, to give the greatest advantages of taxation and liability protection. The LLP is not a separate entity for income tax purposes?profits and losses are passed through to the partners.

Differences Across States

It?s important to understand that laws concerning LLPs vary widely state by state. Generally speaking, LLCs can be formed by any business, persons or person, while LLPs may be restricted to licensed professionals such as attorneys, doctors, engineers, architects and accountants.

In California and Nevada, for example, licensed professionals can form an LLP, but cannot form an LLC. For this reason, a large law firm will opt to form an LLP; they are able to operate as an LLP in every state, but wouldn?t be able to operate as an LLC in every state.

You?ll need to check with your state?s Secretary of State office to determine the specific rules for your state. And if you?re anticipating operating in other states down the road, you should look into their rules as well.

Differences in Personal Asset Protection

While both LLCs and LLPs help shield the personal assets of the owners, there are some critical differences. For example:

In the LLC, members are protected from any debt or liabilities of the business. However, members of an LLC are not protected from the liability of another member. If a member in an LLC makes a client error that is legally actionable, then the LLC and all of its members can be held liable.

In the LLP, partners can be protected from the liability of another member. A partner in an LLP is personally liable only for his own negligence (or of someone working under his direct supervision). Note that this is different from a general partnership, in which each partner is liable for the debts and obligations of the business, as well as the malpractice of other partners.

In some states, a partner in an LLP can still be personally liable for a variety of partnership debts, such as obligations owed to lenders and creditors. However, some states regulate that partners are not personally liable for such debts and obligations. As mentioned above, it?s important to understand the laws of your state.

What About Taxes?

Both the LLC and LLP typically do not require the business to pay income taxes on its profits; rather any profit or loss of the business is passed through to the members (LLC) or partners (LLP). By comparison, a corporation pays income taxes on its business earnings, and then if those earnings are distributed to owners, the owners must pay taxes on them again in their personal tax returns.

A single-member LLC is considered a sole proprietorship, and the member must pay self-employment taxes. It?s important to note that while most LLCs opt for pass-through tax treatment, some may choose to be taxed as a corporation. LLPs are treated strictly as partnerships, and profits are passed through to the partners.

The Bottom Line for Your Business

By mixing some of the properties of corporations, partnerships and sole proprietorships, the LLC and LLP can be very advantageous for new companies. Only LLPs give partners legal protection from the actions of another partner. For this reason, the LLP can be better for a group of professionals who plan to actively participate in the company. If you?re forming a business, take a look at your state law to first determine which entity is allowable in your state, as well as the state laws regarding personal liability for each entity.

How does operating as an LLP or an LLC help your business?

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. ? Bethel University began its 2013 indoor track and field season Saturday with the three-team Bethel Open at Bethel's Sports and Recreation Center. With many Royal competitors out of the country for interim classes, Bethel still managed to compete exceptionally against conference foe St. Olaf and Rockford College.
?
Krista McCright (Sr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa) paced the women's 60-meter dash in both the prelims and the final heat Saturday morning, as the Cedar Rapids, Iowa, native finished the race with a time of 8.41 seconds in the prelims and 8.43 seconds in the finals to capture first place by .24 seconds.
?
The 600-meter race belonged to Bethel as well, as Rebecca Wesley defeated her competition by nearly a second with a time of 1:41.24 in the final heat of the contest. Her middle distance counter part Michelle Tellez tried to give BU the 600- and 800-meter sweep, however, Tellez took second with a time of 2:38.33.
?
The Royals continued its success in the 60-meter hurtles and 4x400 meter relay, as Jenna Yorkovich and Abby Furlong took first and second in the 60-meter hurtles, respectively. Meanwhile, BU continued its success in the relays, capturing first place in the 4x400 with a time of 4:23.67 in the final heat.
?
Bethel's success went beyond the track surface, with exceptional finishes in many field events. Four BU pole-vaulters took No. 2-No.5, but it was KelliAnne O'Leary that just missed first place. Abby Furlong and Rachel Cole edged their competition, however, taking first place in the triple jump and shot put, respectively. Alyssa Solberg captured first place in the weight throw, heaving the weight 13.16 meters.
?
BU's women's track and field squad will compete next weekend at St. Thomas on Friday, January 18. The men and women will participate at the Anderson Field House at 4 p.m.

The 7 Best Foods For Seniors - Retirement Homes

Nearly half of Americans usually make New Year?s resolutions, but less than eight per cent actually follow through on their pledges, the Journal of Clinical Psychology reported last year.

And although New Year?s Day already passed, it?s never too late to set personal goals, and one great way to start 2013 is by eating healthier.

Courtesy of AARP.com, here are seven of the best foods for people over the age of 50:

1/ Apples- These fruits can help to reduce cholesterol, so remember the old adage, ?an apple a day keeps the doctor away.?

2/ Asparagus- Featuring the carotene lycopene, these vegetables can work to reduce the chances of contracting prostate cancer.

3/ Blueberries- Packed with Vitamins C and K, pick up a few of these berries the next time you?re at the grocery store.

4/ Broccoli- Full of fiber, this green vegetable can help boost your immune system.

5/ Butternut squash- If you want to keep your eyes strong, take advantage of the beta-carotene in butternut squash.

6/ Dark chocolate- To help protect your heart, enjoy a piece of dark chocolate for the antioxidants it provides.

7/ Coffee- Both regular and decaf, coffee can help prevent heart attacks.

Eating healthy can be convenient if you live in an assisted living community, but if you live alone and buy your own groceries, make sure to add these items to your next list.

The pain puzzle: Uncovering how morphine increases pain in some people

Jan. 6, 2013 ? For individuals with agonizing pain, it is a cruel blow when the gold-standard medication actually causes more pain. Adults and children whose pain gets worse when treated with morphine may be closer to a solution, based on research published in the January 6 on-line edition of Nature Neuroscience.

"Our research identifies a molecular pathway by which morphine can increase pain, and suggests potential new ways to make morphine effective for more patients," says senior author Dr. Yves De Koninck, Professor at Universit? Laval in Quebec City. The team included researchers from The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto, the Institut universitaire en sant? mentale de Qu?bec, the US and Italy.

New pathway in pain management

The research not only identifies a target pathway to suppress morphine-induced pain but teases apart the pain hypersensitivity caused by morphine from tolerance to morphine, two phenomena previously considered to be caused by the same mechanisms.

"When morphine doesn't reduce pain adequately the tendency is to increase the dosage. If a higher dosage produces pain relief, this is the classic picture of morphine tolerance, which is very well known. But sometimes increasing the morphine can, paradoxically, makes the pain worse," explains co-author Dr. Michael Salter. Dr. Salter is Senior Scientist and Head of Neurosciences & Mental Health at SickKids, Professor of Physiology at University of Toronto, and Canada Research Chair in Neuroplasticity and Pain.

"Pain experts have thought tolerance and hypersensitivity (or hyperalgesia) are simply different reflections of the same response," says Dr. De Koninck, "but we discovered that cellular and signalling processes for morphine tolerance are very different from those of morphine-induced pain."

Dr. Salter adds, "We identified specialized cells -- known as microglia -- in the spinal cord as the culprit behind morphine-induced pain hypersensitivity. When morphine acts on certain receptors in microglia, it triggers the cascade of events that ultimately increase, rather than decrease, activity of the pain-transmitting nerve cells."

The researchers also identified the molecule responsible for this side effect of morphine. "It's a protein called KCC2, which regulates the transport of chloride ions and the proper control of sensory signals to the brain," explains Dr. De Koninck. "Morphine inhibits the activity of this protein, causing abnormal pain perception. By restoring normal KCC2 activity we could potentially prevent pain hypersensitivity." Dr. De Koninck and researchers at Universit? Laval are testing new molecules capable of preserving KCC2 functions and thus preventing hyperalgesia.

The KCC2 pathway appears to apply to short-term as well as to long-term morphine administration, says Dr. De Koninck. "Thus, we have the foundation for new strategies to improve the treatment of post-operative as well as chronic pain."

Dr. Salter adds, "Our discovery could have a major impact on individuals with various types of intractable pain, such as that associated with cancer or nerve damage, who have stopped morphine or other opiate medications because of pain hypersensitivity."

Cost of pain

Pain has been labelled the silent health crisis, afflicting tens of millions of people worldwide. Pain has a profound negative effect on the quality of human life. Pain affects nearly all aspects of human existence, with untreated or under-treated pain being the most common cause of disability. The Canadian Pain Society estimates that chronic pain affects at least one in five Canadians and costs Canada $55-60 billion per year, including health care expenses and lost productivity.

"People with incapacitating pain may be left with no alternatives when our most powerful medications intensify their suffering," says Dr. De Koninck, who is also Director of Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience at Institut universitaire en sant? mentale de Qu?bec.

Dr. Salter adds, "Pain interferes with many aspects of an individual's life. Too often, patients with chronic pain feel abandoned and stigmatized. Among the many burdens on individuals and their families, chronic pain is linked to increased risk of suicide. The burden of chronic pain affects children and teens as well as adults." These risks affect individuals with many types of pain, ranging from migraine and carpel-tunnel syndrome to cancer, AIDS, diabetes, traumatic injuries, Parkinson's disease and dozens of other conditions.

Omega-3 Fats Can Prevent Heart And Chronic Diseases | Your ...

By Irina Carter

omega3Omega-3 fatty acids forms part of the essential fatty acids that we need in our diet. They help the body system to work more efficiently and normally. Omega-3 fatty acids are not readily available in the body and the main source that we can have it is to consume the same from food sources in our diet. The two most important omega-3 fatty acids namely EPA and DHA are primarily available from fishes. There are also plants that naturally contain omega-3 fatty acids like flax where the fatty acids are converted into DHA and EPA when consumed in the body. Other sources of omega-3 fatty acids are salmon, halibut, tune, algae, krill and nut oils.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids and heart diseases

According to the American Heart Association, omega-3 fatty acids are important in our diet because they are valuable sources of fatty acids that can prevent the risk of heart disease. Eating fishes containing high in omega-3 fatty acids like mackerel, sardines, salmon, albacore tuna, lake trout and herring twice a week could help prevent heart disease. Omega-3 fatty acids are also known to promote good cholesterol in the body. People who have good cholesterol levels are known to be fond of eating fish with omega-3 fatty acids. Fats in the blood known as triglycerides are decreased with omega-3 intake. Walnuts are found to be good sources of omega-3 fatty acids as it contains alpha linolenic acid that is readily converted to omega-3.

The body?s blood pressure is also seen to have a favorable response to omega-3 fatty acids. Blood pressure is lower in people with high omega-3 diet. Hypertension

According to the American Heart Association, omega-3 fatty acids are important in our diet because they are valuable sources of fatty acids that can prevent the risk of heart disease.

is prevented in patients who are taking fish oil supplements and those taking at least 3 grams of fish oil daily. Omega-3 fatty acids have been the subject of clinical research and its effectiveness in treating and preventing cardiovascular diseases has been established. The recommended diet among patients with heart disease should consist of low saturated fats and high in monounsaturated and polysaturated fats like the omega-3 fatty acids.

The essential omega-3 fatty acids namely EPA and DHA are important in reducing the risk factors for high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Fish oil supplements are recommended as prevention against high triglycerides or fats in the blood. It can help regulate the rhythm of the heart among those who had previous heart attacks. Omega-3 fatty acids are also known to prevent atherosclerosis where hardening of the arteries occurs that could lead to plaques, blood clots, stroke and heart attack. People taking fish oil supplements are warned against taking higher doses as it could potentially increase the risk of bleeding. Eating more than 3 grams of omega-3 fatty acids daily could also lead to hemorrhagic stroke which is known for its fatality where arteries in the brain ruptures. It is important to take fish oil at the recommended dosage by a doctor or those indicated on the package label. Over dosage of omega-3 fatty acids in one?s diet can be potentially dangerous hence its use must be taken moderately as a health supplement and preventive diet against heart diseases.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids and chronic diseases

Researches also show that omega-3 fatty acids can also be useful in preventing other chronic diseases. It is known to be capable of reducing instances of inflammation in the body. Aside from its health benefits against heart disease, omega 3 can also be a useful preventive measure against cancers and arthritis. Its high concentration in the brain is known to improve cognitive functions like improving brain memory and performance. It can also affect behavioral function. Omega 3 fatty acids also play an important role in preventing visual problems and nerve dysfunction that usually occur among pregnant women. The lack of omega 3 fatty acids in the diet could make a person easily feel tired or fatigued and may result to a poor memory and cognitive function. Omega 3 fatty acid deficiency could also result in mood changes, depression and even poor blood circulation in the body.

Diabetics have high triglycerides with low good cholesterol level. Taking Omega 3 in their diet could improve their triglycerides level and helps them obtain a healthy cholesterol level. However, type 2 diabetics are known to experience high blood sugar when taking fish oil therefore caution should be observed before taking fish oil and must be seen by a doctor first.

Omega 3 fatty acids can also improve the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis which is an autoimmune disease. It is known to reduce the inflammatory response of the body in arthritis and helps relieve joint inflammation and morning stiffness. The health benefit of omega 3 in arthritis is mainly for treating the symptoms of arthritis but it could not help in preventing the progression of the disease such as damage to the joints. Omega 3 fatty acids can also help in relieving the symptoms of osteoarthritis.

Other health benefits of omega 3 fatty acids extends to help relieve the symptoms of other chronic diseases like osteoporosis, Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, inflammatory bowel disease, menstrual pain, macular degeneration, some forms of cancers especially colon, breast and prostate cancers.
