Best run and walk tracking app for iPhone

Best run/walk tracking app for iPhone

Walking and running are hugely popular ways to exercise, and there are several really good iPhone apps that aim to help you keep track of the walking or running you're doing. Since February is Fitness Month at iMore and Mobile Nations, we took a look at the most popular ones, and figured out which one was the best for most people.

That app is Endomondo Pro, and here's why we picked it.

Interface and design

The first thing you'll notice upon launching Endomondo Pro is the interface. It's one of those times when you really learn to appreciate the simplicity of some apps. Everything you need to see is presented to you on one screen, neatly organized, and easily accessible. It becomes obvious right off the bat what you're supposed to do in order to start an activity or log your workout.

The main screen of Endomondo Pro, the workout menu, provides you with the information you need during a run, walk, or other event at a glance. You'll see statistics such as total duration, distance, calories burned, heart rate, and the type of event that you're tracking such as running, walking, cycling, or whatever preset you've selected for that session.

This workout menu is also where you can start, stop, and pause a session as well as choosing a workout type. You'll also see the GPS signal strength which can, of course, affect accuracy when counting steps and tracking statistics.

While you'll spend most of your time inside of the workout menu when using Endomondo Pro, you can also access some other useful features from the main navigation menu. In order to access it, just tap on the menu icon in the upper left hand corner. From here you'll get quite a few more options that we'll go over in more depth below.

Overall, the interface of Endomondo Pro is extremely simple to just pick up and start using. This is one thing that really appealed to me. Dieting and exercising, especially if you're doing so to achieve weight loss, is frustrating enough on its own. It was nice to be able to just start using Endomondo Pro without having to configure a ton of settings and calculations before hand.

Some of the apps we looks at for step counting and run tracking were either too cluttered or didn't provide enough information. Endomondo Pro is a nice compromise that gives you the data you want in a much more simplified way.

Supported activities

Endomondo Pro supports a ton of different kinds of workouts and activities. You can easily switch between them based on what kind of activity you plan on performing. The most obvious ones are there such was running, walking, cycling, mountain biking, and tons more. There are even off-shoots of sports that I wasn't even sure what they were. Bottom line, Endomondo Pro probably has the sport type you're looking for.

From the main workout menu, you can actively change the sport type as often as you'd like for different workouts. If you run in the morning, just tap on the sport type and change it to running. If you walk or perform a different kind of sporting activity later in the day or switch up your workouts day to day, you can again just tap on it and change it for another workout. Each workout you save will log into Endomondo Pro where you can view them in your history. Since everything you save to Endomondo Pro is saved to your account, regardless what device you're logged into, you'll be able to see your progress from past workouts.

Creating and finding routes

When running or walking, a lot of users like to be able to track their routes and progress. Whether you prefer the same routes, go on different ones, or experiment until you find the ones you like, Endomondo Pro can save them for you.

From the navigation menu, choose the Routes option and you'll be given information on routes you have saved. You can also tap on the nearby tab along the top to view any routes that other Endomondo users have saved. This is a nice way to find new areas to run or walk in. You may even find routes that are exactly the length you'd like.

How many routes you find nearby will heavily depend on how many people around you are using Endomondo and sharing their own routes. If you'd like to create your own or don't find any you'd like to use, you can do so by signing into your account on endomondo.com.

I created a few routes for both walking and running and just like the app itself, the website is very easy to navigate and create routes. You start by searching for a starting point by entering it or finding it on the map. You can then drop a point on the map and then continue to drop points to wrap around or twist and turn wherever you'd like. You can also classify that route as a route for running, biking, and more.

You also have options as to who you'd like to be able to see your route. If you want your routes to be private, you can choose the private option. If you'd like other users to be able to utilize and enjoy the routes you've created, you can choose the public option. This means that any Endomondo user that views routes nearby within their own app will see the routes you've created in their area. I was surprised to see there were already a few Endomondo routes created in my area when I first launched the app. I'd assume that users in heavily populated areas will see even more routes already created for them.

GPS & tracking accuracy

The main workout menu screen of Endomondo shows you GPS strength at the very bottom. The better the GPS can track, the more accurate Endomondo Pro will be at delivering the best results and gauging your stats.

I took Endomondo out with me for a day and spent the day counting steps periodically as well as measuring distances with another device. For the most part, Endomondo Pro was spot on if not within just a couple steps or meters off. A lot of this had to do with GPS reception. In areas where the GPS tracking had a high to medium signal, the results were almost always the same and within less than a step or two difference. If I wandered into an area with reception was less than stellar to very poor, Endomondo has more trouble with keeping up with steps and typically fell short.

This is something that's expected with any step or run tracking app that relies on native GPS. I did find Endomondo to be just as accurate, if not more accurate, than RunKeeper, another popular run tracker app available in the App Store.

When it comes to creating routes or scheduling workouts, you'll obviously want them to be in areas where Endomondo Pro can track your activity. For most users, this won't be a problem. In my experience, I only needed a minimum of two signal bars or so (and a data connection) in order for Endomondo to be able to keep up.

Social sharing & community

The social sharing aspects and the community portion of Endomondo Pro are great additions but will highly depend on how engaged the audience around you is. If you have a lot of friends on Facebook or in your contacts that also have iPhones, the odds of you finding some friends that have Endomondo become higher.

Currently, the only way to find friends on Endomondo Pro is to search for your existing friends either by the built-in Address Book or by pulling in your Facebook friends. This is one area where I think Endomondo Pro does need a small amount of improvement. While I did manage to find some friends locally that use the service, it was limited to about 5. If Endomondo were to create their own community where users could have more interaction, I think it would create a fully rounded experience.

As it sits right now, any friends that you've added to Endomondo Pro will have to accept your invitation. After that their data will start feeding into the News Feed section of the app. The only other way you can interact or view data on other users is with a premium yearly or monthly subscription. We'll talk about that in just a few minutes.

There are lots of users out there that don't really care about making their workout routines social. If that sounds like you, this aspect of Endomondo Pro probably won't bother you as much. If you do need that extra encouragement from friends and family to work towards your exercise goals, you may have to do the leg work to see if anyone in your area is using the service already. In my experience, while Endomondo Pro doesn't have a huge following, even in my tiny area I was able to find users that I can interact with.

Pricing

Endomondo Pro for iPhone is currently available in the App Store for $4.99. There is a free slimmed down version available if you'd like to try it before you buy. The $4.99 gets you access to create routes, save a history, choose and customize workouts, and more.

If you'd like even more information and stats, Endomondo does have subscription plans available that offer even more functionality. For $19.99 a year or $2.99 per month, you can gain access to Endomondo Premium. Outside of all the features that Endomondo Pro offers, you'll also get heart rate zone information for better training control, workout comparisons, peer benchmarks to view how you stack up to not only your friends but other Endomondo users as well, training analysis, and weather information for your area that will log with your training sessions.

For most users, the base $4.99 price for Endomondo Pro will do what they need it to do while more advanced or hardcore users that train regularly will find a lot of value in the premium subscription.

The bottom line

There are several walk and run tracking apps available in the App Store and all of them have their benefits and their drawbacks. Endomondo Pro offers a happy medium between functionality and ease of use. While it won't give you as much data as an app with dedicated hardware would give you, the GPS and tracking portion holds its own against RunKeeper.

We found the layout of Endomondo Pro to be enjoyable. Creating routes on your own is also super simple and syncs to your device through your account almost instantly. Whether you're just getting started with step tracker apps or are looking for a new one to replace the current, Endomondo Pro provides a great experience complete with the tools you need to stay on track during training time.

Video: Pilot lands plane without landing gear

>>> an amazing feat of airmanship and an incredible display of steely determination and grit. chances are you haven't heard about it. 14 months ago on a flight from newark to warsaw , carrying many american passengers, an airline pilot faced potential disaster. the plane's wheels were stuck. he saved everyone on board, and now he's being hailed as the polish "sully." in the skies over warsaw , lott polish airlines flight 16 with 231 on board was just second away from attempting an emergency landing like no other. captain add tad bronaugh had spnt -- had spent an hour and 20 minutes trying to land with no wheels. to no avail, he had no choice but to belly flop the plane with runners acting like a sled on to a concrete runway. in the final moments, the passengers were ready for the worst. like the other passengers, greg cohen had his head between his legs. what were the final instructions before landing?

>> they had us get in ready position, you know. they were telling us to brace for impact. praying to god that everything was going to be okay.

>> and then it happened. flight 16 touched down at more than 140 miles per hour. this is the moment of contact on the runway shot from inside the cabin.

>> and than -- then we touched down, the impact never came. i was waiting for this like car crash to be in an accident.

>> no bounce?

>> to be honest, it was one of the smoothest landings i've ever had.

>> incredibly, it was a smooth touchdown. a miracle in warsaw .

>> the plane came to a stop, and everybody roared with applause. [ applause ]

>> but it didn't last more than two seconds. you had the flight attendant immediately stand up and just yell, "get off this plane now!"

>> suddenly there was another danger -- there was smoke and a fire on the right side engine. passengers rushed for the emergency slides. and a few fell as they tried to run away . but emergency crews were able to douse the flames, and the fuel leak quickly. the plane didn't explode. except for a few scrapes and bruises, everyone got off unharmed.

>> i immediately -- i thought that our captain was poland's version of sully.

>> same incredible amount of airmanship.

>> yes.

>> what would you like to say to the captain?

>> i want to say thank you. if it wasn't for him, maybe 230-plus people wouldn't be here right now. and i'm forever indebted to him for that.

>> captain bronaugh is a polish national hero and has been honored for his heroism in the united states .

Cancer survivors star at fashion show in Ecuador

QUITO, Ecuador (AP) ? Just minutes before showtime, the neophyte models fidgeted nervously as helpers rushed to put the final touches on makeup and adjust the clothes.

But when the time came, the 15 young women and men, each in turn, headed down the catwalk ? some gracefully, others a little more challenged by the artificial limbs they all use after surviving cancer.

The models came from Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela to be part of the Day of Bionic Fashion event, which was organized by the Youth Against Cancer Foundation.

"Parading is my little victory, a dream, a big goal accomplished," said Diana Armijos, an amputee who participated in Tuesday night's event while also in the final week of pregnancy. "I dedicate it to my baby because before the show I had to go to a medical appointment and then come to the parade."

With TV cameramen and other journalists crowded along the runway, the models drew applause, smiles and repeated congratulations.

"We were all very tired, very nervous to get out in front of so many people, but it went very well," Armijos said.

Youth Against Cancer said the fashion show was arranged to broaden the horizons of young people with cancer.

"We want to fulfill the dreams of young people with cancer," said the foundation's director, Gustavo Davila. "No matter what their life expectancy, they are entitled to keep dreaming until the end, to be treated with dignity."

Opposition leader's funeral brings day of reckoning for Tunisia

TUNIS (Reuters) - Tunisia's political crisis looked likely to deepen on Friday with strikes and protests planned around the funeral of assassinated opposition politician Chokri Belaid.

Belaid's killing on Wednesday has brought thousands of people onto the streets of the capital Tunis and other cities in violence-marred protests.

Unions have called a general strike for Friday, setting the stage for further confrontation two years on from the pro-democracy revolution that inspired the Arab Spring.

Tunisia is riven by tensions between the dominant Islamists and their secular opponents, and by disillusionment over the lack of social progress since the overthrow of dictator Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali in January 2011.

In response to Belaid's assassination, Prime Minister Hamdi Jebali, an Islamist, said on Wednesday he would dissolve the government, name a non-partisan cabinet of technocrats and hold early elections. But his partners opposed the move and it is yet to be approved by parliament.

No one has claimed responsibility for the killing of Belaid, a lawyer and secular political figure, who was shot by a gunman as he left home for work on Wednesday.

But a crowd set fire to the headquarters of Ennahda, the Islamist party of Prime Minister Jebali, who leads a coalition with two junior secularist parties. Ennahda denies any involvement.

While Belaid had only a modest political following, his criticism of Ennahda policies spoke for many Tunisians who fear religious radicals are bent on snuffing out freedoms won in the first of the revolts that rippled through the Arab world.

"Criminals assassinated Chokri's body, but will not assassinate Chokri's struggle," his widow Besma said on Thursday.

"My sadness ended when I saw thousands flocking to the streets...at that moment I knew that the country is fine and men and women in my country are defending democracy, freedom and life."

All three ruling parties and sections of the opposition rebuffed Jebali's plan to create a small, technocrat government to take over day-to-day matters until elections could be held, demanding they be consulted before any such move.

"In the likely event that there is no agreement, civil unrest will increase, reaching a level that cannot be contained by the police," said Firas Abi Ali of the London-based Exclusive Analysis think-tank.

"If unrest continued for more than two weeks, the army would probably reluctantly step in and back a technocrat government, as well as fresh elections for a new Constituent Assembly."

The economic effect of political uncertainty and street unrest could be serious in a country which has yet to draft a post-revolutionary constitution and which relies heavily on the tourist trade.

The cost of insuring Tunisian government bonds against default rose to its highest level in more than four years on Thursday and ratings agency Fitch said it could further downgrade Tunisia if political instability continues or worsens.

The 5 Basic Insurance Policies Everyone Should Have - Mint

Insurance Policy

When it comes to buying insurance, there are so many options on the market today that you might not know what?s necessary and what?s superfluous.

It?s important to be covered, but you can also be too covered. Paying for too much insurance takes money away from other areas, such as your emergency fund and your retirement savings.

When it comes to insurance, there are basically five types that everyone needs.

Health Insurance

This is the big one. In 2009, over 60 percent of all personal bankruptcies were related to health insurance costs.

When purchasing health insurance, consider the following:

  • Needs: Young and healthy single people require less coverage than those with young families, the elderly, or those with chronic health issues. Do you plan on using your insurance a lot? If so, you?re going to want a low deductible and copays.
  • Doctors: One of the first questions you should ask about a plan is if it allows you to keep your current physician.
  • Cost: You can obviously only afford so much, so know what you can afford. Shopping for plans with higher copays and deductibles will save you money on your premium.

Car Insurance

Not only will you want car insurance, nearly every state requires that you have it.

For those with an older car, no more than the bare minimum may be required.

However, if you have a newer car or a car with a high value, you will also want to insure it against theft.

The main types of car insurance are:

  • Liability: Liability coverage comes in two forms: bodily injury and property damage liability. These cover damage to others and their property. They do not cover the driver or passengers.
  • Personal Injury Protection: This type of coverage will cover medical expenses related to driver and passenger injuries.
  • Collision: Get collision insurance if you want your insurance to cover the cost of damage done to your car, whether you are at fault or not.
  • Comprehensive: Collision only covers damage done in an accident. For example, if a tree falls on your car and destroys it, you?ll need comprehensive insurance to get compensation.
  • Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist: This covers you in the event that the person who hits your car does not have enough insurance to cover the damage ? or any coverage at all.

Homeowner?s or Renter?s Insurance

Renter?s insurance covers you against damage or theft of personal items in an apartment. For urbanites, the low cost of renter?s insurance can be well worth the peace of mind that it provides.

Homeowner?s insurance is absolutely essential. It protects your most valuable asset against damage and theft.

However, sometimes homeowner?s insurance isn?t enough to fully protect your home.

Ask your insurance agent if you need additional insurance against flooding, earthquakes, fires and other disasters that might not be covered under standard plans.

Life Insurance

No one likes to think about it, but life insurance is an essential component of protecting your family in the event that you pass before your time.

There are costs associated with dying, such as burial and mortuary fees. Further, if you are the primary breadwinner, life insurance will help your family to offset the lost income.

The latter is the main reason that people get health insurance. The single and childless might not need life insurance, but everyone else should invest in a policy now.

Disability Insurance

Disability insurance is actually quite a bit like life insurance. It reimburses you for income lost during periods of time that you are not able to work.

As one third of all Americans are disabled at some point, having this insurance makes good financial sense for the single and married, parents and non-parents.

Disability insurance can cover permanent, temporary, partial and total disability.

No one knows what tomorrow might bring and disability insurance is relatively cheap ? far less than the cost of not having it if something goes wrong.

Five Unnecessary Insurance Policies

There are a number of insurance policies that most people probably do not need. These include:

  • Flight insurance: Flying is one of the safest ways to travel.
  • Life Insurance for Kids: Life insurance exists to replace lost income. Children have none.
  • Accidental Death Insurance: Even the accident-prone should skip this insurance, which generally contains so many restrictions that it is nearly impossible to collect.
  • Disease Insurance: A good health insurance policy is probably a far better investment than trying to cover yourself for every type of ailment out there.
  • Mortgage Life Insurance: Another redundant form of insurance, a good term life policy will cover your mortgage in the event of your death.

Protect Yourself Without Paranoia

The urge to protect yourself against any calamity is understandable. Most people would rather pay a little bit of money every month rather than worry about coming up with a larger amount of money during a time of crisis.

On the flip side, some people might think that they have nothing to worry about. The five types of insurance identified in this article are general policies most everyone should have.

The five unnecessary types of insurance mentioned are policies that are uncommon and are most likely a waste of money.

Everything else falls somewhere in between: Some people definitely need certain policies (such as malpractice insurance), while some will never need others (flood insurance for a home on a hill in the Arizona desert).

New coal technology harnesses energy without burning, nears pilot-scale development

Feb. 6, 2013 ? COLUMBUS, Ohio?A new form of clean coal technology reached an important milestone recently, with the successful operation of a research-scale combustion system at Ohio State University. The technology is now ready for testing at a larger scale.

For 203 continuous hours, the Ohio State combustion unit produced heat from coal while capturing 99 percent of the carbon dioxide produced in the reaction.

Liang-Shih Fan, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering and director of Ohio State?s Clean Coal Research Laboratory, pioneered the technology called Coal-Direct Chemical Looping (CDCL), which chemically harnesses coal?s energy and efficiently contains the carbon dioxide produced before it can be released into the atmosphere.

?In the simplest sense, combustion is a chemical reaction that consumes oxygen and produces heat,? Fan said. ?Unfortunately, it also produces carbon dioxide, which is difficult to capture and bad for the environment. So we found a way to release the heat without burning. We carefully control the chemical reaction so that the coal never burns?it is consumed chemically, and the carbon dioxide is entirely contained inside the reactor.?

Dawei Wang, a research associate and one of the group's team leaders, described the technology?s potential benefits. "The commercial-scale CDCL plant could really promote our energy independence. Not only can we use America's natural resources such as Ohio coal, but we can keep our air clean and spur the economy with jobs," he said.

Though other laboratories around the world are trying to develop similar technology to directly convert coal to electricity, Fan?s lab is unique in the way it processes fossil fuels. The Ohio State group typically studies coal in the two forms that are already commonly available to the power industry: crushed coal ?feedstock,? and coal-derived syngas.

The latter fuel has been successfully studied in a second sub-pilot research-scale unit, through a similar process called Syngas Chemical Looping (SCL). Both units are located in a building on Ohio State?s Columbus campus, and each is contained in a 25-foot-high insulated metal cylinder that resembles a very tall home water heater tank.

No other lab has continuously operated a coal-direct chemical looping unit as long as the Ohio State lab did last September. But as doctoral student Elena Chung explained, the experiment could have continued.

?We voluntarily chose to stop the unit. We actually could have run longer, but honestly, it was a mutual decision by Dr. Fan and the students. It was a long and tiring week where we all shared shifts,? she said.

Fan agreed that the nine-day experiment was a success. ?In the two years we?ve been running the sub-pilot plants, our CDCL and SCL units have achieved a combined 830 operating hours, which clearly demonstrates the reliability and operability of our design,? he said.

At any one time, the units each produce about 25 thermal kilowatts?that is, thermal energy, which in a full-scale power plant would be used to heat water and turn the steam-powered turbines that create electricity.

The researchers are about to take their technology to the next level: a larger-scale pilot plant is under construction at the U.S. Department of Energy?s National Carbon Capture Center in Wilsonville, AL. Set to begin operations in late 2013, that plant will produce 250 thermal kilowatts using syngas.

The key to the technology is the use of tiny metal beads to carry oxygen to the fuel to spur the chemical reaction. For CDCL, the fuel is coal that?s been ground into a powder, and the metal beads are made of iron oxide composites. The coal particles are about 100 micrometers across?about the diameter of a human hair?and the iron beads are larger, about 1.5-2 millimeters across. Chung likened the two different sizes to talcum powder and ice cream sprinkles, though the mix is not nearly so colorful.

The coal and iron oxide are heated to high temperatures, where the materials react with each other. Carbon from the coal binds with the oxygen from the iron oxide and creates carbon dioxide, which rises into a chamber where it is captured. Hot iron and coal ash are left behind. Because the iron beads are so much bigger than the coal ash, they are easily separated out of the ash, and delivered to a chamber where the heat energy would normally be harnessed for electricity. The coal ash is removed from the system.

The carbon dioxide is separated and can be recycled or sequestered for storage. The iron beads are exposed to air inside the reactor, so that they become re-oxidized be used again. The beads can be re-used almost indefinitely, or recycled.

Since the process captures nearly all the carbon dioxide, it exceeds the goals that DOE has set for developing clean energy. New technologies that use fossil fuels should not raise the cost of electricity more than 35 percent, while still capturing more than 90 percent of the resulting carbon dioxide. Based on the current tests with the research-scale plants, Fan and his team believe that they can meet or exceed that requirement.

The DOE funded this research, and collaborating companies include Babcock & Wilcox Power Generation Group, Inc.; CONSOL Energy, Inc.; and Clear Skies Consulting, LLC.

LONDON (AP) ? The discovery of King Richard III under a parking lot in the English city of Leicester thrilled history buffs around the world. But the news meant a winter of discontent for the rival city of York, and now the two are doing battle over the royal bones.

Officials in Leicester say the monarch, who was unceremoniously buried without a coffin 528 years ago, will be re-interred with kingly dignity in the city's cathedral.

"The decision has already been made," said Leicester mayor Peter Soulsby. "All the permissions have been granted and the various authorities involved have agreed that the interment will take place in Leicester."

Not so fast, says York, a city 100 miles (160 kilometers) to the north that claims the late monarch as its own.

"Every taxi driver I talk to, every shopkeeper I talk to, they are very excited about it ? they want Richard back in York," said Michael Ormrod, professor of medieval history at the University of York. "There is a view that he is a king for York."

York City Council said Wednesday it is petitioning the government and Queen Elizabeth II, arguing that "one of the city's most famous and cherished sons" ? who grew up in the region and was once known as Richard of York ? should be buried in the northern city.

The two cities have launched rival petitions to the government. As of Wednesday, York had the edge, with more than 5,700 signatures on a petition calling for Richard to be re-interred there. Leicester's petition had more than 2,000 names.

Yorkists hope the queen will intervene on behalf of her 15th-century predecessor, though Buckingham Palace says it is not getting involved.

Richard had few links to Leicester, apart from dying in battle nearby in 1485. Historians agree he had strong ties to York.

He belonged to the House of York, one of two branches of the ruling Plantagenet dynasty. William Shakespeare's play "Richard III" opens with the lines: "Now is the winter of our discontent/ made glorious summer by this son of York" ? a punning reference to Richard's brother, King Edward IV.

Richard spent much of his childhood in the county of Yorkshire. As an adult, he ran northern England during his brother's reign, and he is sometimes called the country's last northern king.

Ormrod says there is evidence Richard wanted to be buried in York Minster, the city's medieval cathedral.

York has not always made a noise about its ties to a king who for centuries was Britain's most reviled monarch. Richard was defeated at the Battle of Bosworth Field by the forces of Henry Tudor, who took the throne as King Henry VII, ending a bloody tussle over the crown known as the Wars of the Roses.

Tudor historians painted Richard as a villainous usurper and accused him of multiple crimes ? most famously, the murder of his two nephews, the "Princes in the Tower."

Richard's supporters hope the discovery of the king's remains will lead to a reappraisal of his reputation.

For those in York who have been keeping Richard's flame alive, this is a bittersweet time.

Mike Bennett, who runs York's small Richard III Museum, said he had been circulating a petition for months ? since the reports of the skeleton's identity emerged ? "but it's only since the bones have been declared to be him that others have jumped on the bandwagon."

Still, Bennett will be delighted if Richard comes home to York. It would give a boost to his small museum tucked into a gatehouse in the city walls, where visitors are invited to act as jury in an imaginary trial of Richard for the murder of the Princes in the Tower.

For now, the battle over the royal bones remains civilized. There's no new outbreak of the Wars of the Roses ? yet.

"I have many good friends in Leicester," Ormrod stressed.

The professor would not go so far as to call burial in Leicester an insult ? but he said it would, at least, be an irony.

"Leicester was a very big stronghold of the house of Lancaster, Richard's rivals for the throne," he said. "He was buried almost in enemy territory in Leicester."
