How did I miss this until now? This clip has apparently been making the rounds of the Interwebs for years, but I couldn?t resist posting it after I saw it on Facebook this morning. I have no idea where the article was published?nor whether it?s a joke?though the news may have originated from a 2005 poll by Ipsos.

'Occupy' protests go global (Politico)

ROME ? Italian police fired tear gas and water cannons Saturday in Rome as violent protesters turned a demonstration against corporate greed into a riot, smashing shop and bank windows, torching cars and hurling bottles.

The protest in the Italian capital, which left dozens injured, was part of the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations against capitalism and austerity measures that went global Saturday.

Tens of thousands nicknamed ?the indignant? marched in major cities across Europe, as protests that began in New York linked up with long-running demonstrations against government cost-cutting and failed financial policies in Europe.

Heavy smoke billowed into the air in downtown Rome as a small group broke away from the main demonstration and wreaked havoc in streets close to the Colosseum.

Clad in black with their faces covered, protesters threw rocks, bottles and incendiary devices at banks and Rome police in riot gear. Some protesters had clubs, others had hammers. They destroyed bank ATMs, set trash bins on fire and assaulted at least two news crews from Sky Italia.

TV footage showed police in riot gear charging the protesters and firing water cannons at them. Several police forces and protesters were injured, including one man trying to stop the protesters from throwing bottles. TV footage showed a young woman with blood covering her face, while the ANSA news agency said one man had lost two fingers when a firecracker exploded.

In the city?s St. John in Lateran square, police vans came under attack, with protesters hurling rocks and cobblestones and smashing the vehicles. One police van was set ablaze, but the two people inside were able to abandon the vehicle. Peaceful demonstrators who could not leave the square climbed up the staircase outside the Basilica, one of the oldest in Rome.

Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno blamed the violence on ?a few thousand thugs from all over Italy, and possibly from all over Europe.? He said some Rome museums were forced to close down because of the violence.

Some protesters also trashed offices of the Defense Ministry and set them on fire, causing the roof to collapse, reports said.

Police were out in force as up to 100,000 protesters had been expected a day after Premier Silvio Berlusconi barely survived a confidence vote in Parliament. Italy, which has a national debt ratio second only to Greece in the 17-nation eurozone, is rapidly becoming a focus of concern in Europe?s debt crisis.

?People of Europe: Rise Up!? read one banner in Rome. Some peaceful demonstrators turned against the violent group and tried to stop them, hurling bottles, Sky Italia and ANSA said. Others fled, scared by the raw violence.

ANSA said four people from an anarchist group were arrested early Saturday morning, with police seizing helmets, anti-gas masks, clubs and hundreds of bottles from their car.

Who gets your Internet passwords when you die?

ICanHazCheezburger.com

By Helen A.S. Popkin

In the event of ? shall we say ? unforeseen circumstances, responsible adults have long kept a will, and if they're especially thoughtful, all their pertinent papers, in a single easy to find location. But what happens when a person's worldly goods don't exist in the world, but in the "cloud?"

A recent survey found that UK Internet users store at least $3.2 billion worth of worth of personal videos, music, books and photos in the cloud, stored by third-parties and accessed by users over the Internet. "The survey also suggests that 31 per cent of UK adults have considered what they might pass on to family members in terms of what is now being defined as their personal 'digital inheritance,' " reports Rackspace Hosting, the Internet storage company that conducted the survey.

Whether these survey participants actually get around do doing that, however, is a question unanswered by the survey.

One wonders how much U.S. Internet users are prepared in comparison to our UK counterparts. As we increasingly live more of our lives online, a variety of services continue to pop up to manage our Facebook, Twitter and other online accounts in the event of our untimely demise.

"Think about it: there?s online banking, online grocery shopping, online dating and online job hunting. From playing poker to shoe shopping, we use the Internet to live our lives all the time," reads the description for Legacy Locker, a service that will help manage your online dealings after death. "Oh, and the water cooler just went digital, too, as Facebook and Twitter have us all connected in a perpetual virtual chatroom. Our lives are now a digital experience and we spend more than a third of our time online socializing with friends and building relationships."

Then there's your Kindle, your iTunes, your online photo albums. and maybe even your "Second Life" avatar. Do you want someone to have access to that precious?cloud content, or could you not?care less??More than half of the 2,000 people surveyed considered this digital property?store to be?"treasured possessions."?Yet more than two-thirds don't take into account that?this password-protected content?is stored by a third party, or that they're using the so-called cloud.

Use it they do however ? one in 10 had their heads in cloud more than an average of five hours a day, and more than 76 days in total over a year.?The survey found four?distinct cloud user profiles. See if you can spot yourself in these descriptions:

Head in the Clouds: The most common new social profile which represents?66 per cent of online respondents who are cloud users but don't think or?don't know they are.

e-Hoarders: Representing almost one in ten of the respondents (8 percent), these people are completely immersed in the cloud and use it to?stash everything for safekeeping, and sometimes to keep their physical?space tidy. They are as digitally disorganised as they are in their?homes ? never properly naming files etc. and have thousands of digital things which they are afraid to delete, just in case.

Cloud sceptics: This group represents almost one in five (20 percent) respondents who, while they rely on the cloud, worry about control of?their data and wonder who, or what, has their stuff.

2020 teenagers: This group of pre-teens are digital natives who do not?distinguish between hardware, software or data ? the cloud is simply a way? of life. They also reveal the most about the future direction of cloud?services and usage.

"The cloud is becoming more and more part of our everyday work and personal life," Fabio Torlini, VP of Cloud at Rackspace said of the survey. With the large investment?Internet users "seem to be making in digital treasures,? it's imperative that people consider the associated security and legacy implications."

More on the annoying way we live now:

Apple reportedly trying to add movie streaming to its iCloud

Apple's iCloud may have only just launched but according to rumors reported by the LA Times and Wall Street Journal, it's already negotiating with Hollywood to add movies to the service (funny how things have changed in five years.) The timing is particularly curious because Apple, along with Disney, is one of the notable holdouts from the movie studio-backed Ultraviolet scheme with similar buy once / stream anywhere aspirations that just hit the streets this week. However, according to "people familiar with the matter" it could allow Ultraviolet access on iThings via app, while also bringing its usual media lock-in magic by also throwing in streaming copies of any flicks purchased on iTunes, but only on its own hardware. Recently activated streaming of purchased TV shows to the Apple TV shows the cloud's potential, but we'll have to wait for deals to be signed before that North Carolina datacenter puts Hollywood's best on its to-do list.

Apple reportedly trying to add movie streaming to its iCloud originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 13 Oct 2011 05:25:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Congress passes 3 free trade agreements (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Congress approved free trade agreements Wednesday with South Korea, Colombia and Panama, ending a four-year drought in the forming of new trade partnerships and giving the White House and Capitol Hill the opportunity to show they can work together to stimulate the economy and put people back to work.

In rapid succession, the House and Senate voted on the three trade pacts, which the administration says could boost exports by $13 billion and support tens of thousands of American jobs. None of the votes were close, despite opposition from labor groups and other critics of free trade agreements who say they result in job losses and ignore labor rights problems in the partner countries.

"We don't do much around here that's bipartisan these days," said Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, who was U.S. Trade Representative during the George W. Bush administration. "This is an example of where we can come together as Republicans and Democrats realizing that with 14 million Americans out of work, we need to do things to move our economy forward."

President Barack Obama said passage of the agreements was "a major win for American workers and businesses."

"Tonight's vote, with bipartisan support, will significantly boost exports that bear the proud label `Made in America,' support tens of thousands of good-paying American jobs and protect labor rights, the environment and intellectual property. ... I look forward to signing these agreements."

The agreements would lower or eliminate tariffs that American exporters face in the three countries. They also take steps to better protect intellectual property and improve access for American investors in those countries. The last free trade agreement completed was with Peru in 2007.

The House also passed and sent to Obama for his signature a bill to extend aid to workers displaced by foreign competition. Obama had demanded that the worker aid bill be part of the trade package.

Years in the making, the votes come just a day after Senate Republicans were unified in rejecting Obama's $447 billion jobs creation initiative

The agreement with South Korea, the world's 13th largest economy, was the biggest such deal since the North American Free Trade Agreement with Mexico and Canada in 1994.

The votes were 278-151 for South Korea, 300-129 for Panama and 262-167 for Colombia. The Senate votes were 83-15 for Korea, 77-22 for Panama and 66-33 for Colombia.

Despite the strong majorities, the debate was not without rancor.

Republicans criticized Obama for taking several years to send the agreements, all signed in the President George W. Bush administration, to Congress for final approval. Many among Obama's core supporters, including organized labor and Democrats from areas hit hard by foreign competition, were unhappy that the White House was espousing the benefits of free trade.

Lori Wallach, director of Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch, said the "job-killing" agreements were a "complete flip-flop for President Obama, who won crucial swing states by pledging to overhaul our flawed trade policies."

In Cartagena, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said, "Today is a historic day for relations between Colombia and the United States." He added that the agreement with his country "is going to generate much well-being for our peoples."

But Tarsicio Mora, president of Colombia's CUT labor federation, said Colombia's economy was not ready to compete with the U.S.

"Our country isn't developed, it does not have the expertise much less the requirements for trade at this level," Mora said. "The country should be clear as to who is responsible for the coming massacre, because industry, large and small businesses are going to be hit because we are not in a condition to compete."

Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli said the trade agreement will help to attract foreign investment and increase commerce with the U.S., contributing to the creation of new jobs in the Central American country.

"We, Panamanians, have to prepare to take advantage of this agreement," Martinelli said in a statement.

Panama's Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture called it "a historic moment for Panama."

"This is a historic moment for Panama. A treaty with the largest trading partner in the world has been ratified and this will open the doors to a very important market," said chamber president Federico Humbert in a statement.

"We hope this agreement will bring great opportunities for Panama, while encouraging competitiveness and attract more foreign investment to our country," Humbert said.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said that before taking up free trade agreements the House should be considering legislation passed by the Senate on Tuesday that would punish China for keeping its currency undervalued, a practice that makes its exports cheaper and contributes to China's huge trade surplus with the United States. House GOP leaders oppose the currency bill and a Democratic attempt to attach it to the Colombia agreement was rejected.

Democratic opposition was particularly strong against the agreement with Colombia, where labor leaders long have faced the threat of violence.

"I find it deeply disturbing that the United States Congress is even considering a free trade agreement with a country that holds the world record for assassinations of trade unionists," said Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif.

To address Democratic objections to the deals, the White House demanded linking the trade bills to extension of a Kennedy-era program that helps workers displaced by foreign competition with retraining and financial aid. The Senate went along; the House passed it Wednesday, 307-122.

But with the focus in both the White House and Congress on jobs, the trade agreements enjoyed wide bipartisan support.

The administration says the three deals will boost U.S. exports by $13 billion a year and that just the agreement with South Korea, America's seventh largest trading partner, will support 70,000 American jobs.

Supporters say the three trading partners already enjoy almost duty-free access to U.S. markets and the agreements will lower tariffs on U.S. goods, making them significantly more competitive.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce notes that U.S. farm products sold to South Korea face 54 percent tariffs, compared with 9 percent for Korean agricultural goods in the United States, and that U.S. automakers are hit with a 35 percent tariff in Colombia, compared with 2 percent for any vehicles coming from Colombia.

The administration says the trade deal with South Korea could increase exports by $10 billion, enough to eliminate the current $10 billion surplus Seoul has with the United States. It would make 95 percent of American consumer and industrial goods duty free within five years.

The vote came a day before Korean President Lee Myung-bak is to address a joint meeting of Congress. On Wednesday he said in a speech at the Chamber of Congress that the agreement would "send a powerful message to the world that the United States and South Korea stand together in rejecting protectionism and that we are open to free and fair trade."

Republicans welcomed the prospect of increased exports but said those benefits could have come sooner if Obama had acted more quickly. They said American businesses have paid $3.8 billion in tariffs to Colombia since the trade agreement was signed, and that Americans are losing markets in South Korea because of a Korea-European Union free trade agreement that went into effect in July.

In the past year the administration has succeeded in winning concessions from South Korea to open up its markets further to U.S. vehicles and concluded an agreement to bring transparency to banking practices in Panama, known as a tax haven.

It has prodded Colombia into putting together a plan designed to protect labor rights and crack down on violence against labor leaders.

The United States has free trade relations with 17 nations. It could still take several months to work out the final formalities before the current agreements go into force. The South Korean parliament is expected to sign off on its agreement this month.

Asus N55SF-A1

When it comes to speaker sound quality, not all laptops are created equal. Because of their size, desktop replacement laptops tend to have better speaker systems than smaller laptops, sometimes accommodating up to four speakers and subwoofer. The Asus N55SF-A1 ($1,249.99 list), a desktop replacement, uses sound quality as its unique selling proposition, as the speakers are design by none other than world-renown Bang & Olufsen ICEpower. In addition to a pair of powerful built-in speakers, the N55SF-A1 also comes with an external subwoofer that amplifies the bass. And it's a powerful laptop too, equipped with a quad-core Intel processor and hardcore gaming graphics from Nvidia. It'll cost you a significant chunk of change, though.

Design
The finish on the plastic lid of the N55SF-A1 has the glossy look and feel of black grand piano, accentuated by a chrome trim. Although elegant, it still isn't as aesthetically pleasing as the metal-clad Dell XPS 15z (Microsoft) ($999.99 list, 4 stars) and Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) ($2,199 direct, 4 stars) take laptops designs to a whole new level?and they're a lot thinner two (an inch thick). At 1.4-inch thick, the N55SF-A1 is over a third of an inch thicker than its metallic counterparts, and as thick as the Sony VAIO VPC-F226FM/B ($1,389.99 list, 4 stars), mainly because powerful parts warrant a thicker frame and some extra heft as well. Case in point: At 6.1 pounds, the N55SF-A1 is about a half a pound heavier than the Dell 15z and Apple 15-inch, both of which weigh 5.5 pounds.

The 15.6-inch widescreen is absolutely stunning. Like the Sony VPC-F226FM/B and dell, it sports an awe-inspiring 1,920-by-1,080 resolution, which is the highest available on a laptop. In contrast, other desktop replacements like the Lenovo IdeaPad Y570 ($849.99 Direct, 3.5 stars) and Acer Aspire TimelineX 5830TG-6402 ($800 list, 3.5 stars) have boilerplate 1,366-by-768 resolution screens. Asus chose a traditional keyboard instead of the ever-so-popular chiclet-style ones. The interconnected keys were responsive and will serve any typist ably, but it lacks the LED backlights seen on the keyboards of the Dell 15z and MacBook Pro 15-inch. It comes with a huge touchpad, though the mouse buttons could be softer and quieter.

Features
The N55SF-A1 comes with a plate full of cutting-edge features that will keep it future-proofed for years to come. It's equipped with a Blu-ray drive, which splendidly complements the 1080p screen. Alternatively, you can stream your Blu-ray flicks to a bigger flat panel by using the HDMI port and compatible cable. It comes with four USB ports (two of which are USB 2.0, and two of which are USB 3.0), Ethernet, VGA, and a media card reader. The 750GB, 5,400rpm hard drive is larger in terms of capacity than the 500GB ones found in the Dell 15z and Lenovo Y570.

The laptop's standout feature is its audio system, developed through a partnership with Bang & Olufsen ICEpower. Two huge speakers are situated right above the keyboard, belting out crisp audio and boosting volume levels beyond those of the Dell 15z and Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch. It lacks a built-in subwoofer, though, which can usually be found in the bottom of the laptop. Instead, Asus threw in an external subwoofer, which looks like a humongous salt shaker and connects via a proprietary port found on the right side of the laptop. The bass drastically improves when it's connected, but it's an external attachment.

Performance
Asus N55SF-A1 The N55SF-A1's premium features are accompanied by premium parts. Its 2GHz Intel Core i7-2630QM processor has a total of four physical cores, in a quad-core configuration, making it furiously fast. Combined with 8GB of DDR3 memory, the N55SF-A1 scored 4.35 points in Cinebench R11.5 and finished our Handbrake test in one minute 37 seconds .It easily outperformed the Dell 15z (2.53 in Cinebench R11.5, 2:02 in Handbrake) and Lenovo Y570 (2.54 in Cinebench R11.5, 1:59 in Handbrake). In PCMark 7, a gauge of day-to-day performance, the N55SF-A1 scored 2,482, just beating the similarly-equipped Sony F226FM/B's score of 2,236.

The N55SF-A1 is also a viable gaming laptop, thanks to the Nvidia GeForce GT 555M, which is the most powerful of the two graphics chips installed (the first one is Intel's integrated graphics). It grabbed top marks in all of our gaming tests, including 3DMark 06 (12,447), Crysis (77.2 frames per second) and Lost Planet 2 (55.3 fps) at medium settings. In other words, it'll rack up higher frame rates than the Dell 15z, Sony F226FM//B, and Lenovo Y570, which also use discrete Nvidia chips.

Most laptops that ship with Nvidia graphics chips are also equipped with Optimus, an automatic graphics switching technology that chooses the best graphics chip for any given task. For gaming, Optimus automatically defaults to the GeForce GT 555M, and defaults to integrated graphics on non-3D-intensive tasks, like Web surfing and when running on battery. This would explain why the N55SF-A1 performed well in battery tests, yielding a score of 4 hours 39 minutes. It outlasted the Sony F226FM/B (3:36) by over an hour, but trailed significantly behind the Dell 15z (7:13) and Lenovo Y570 (6:14) (their Core i5 processors aren't as demanding).

The Asus N55SF-A1 is one of the best sounding desktop replacements in the business, thanks to some fine audio tuning and speaker hardware from Bang & Olufsen ICEpower. As a laptop, it's ferociously fast and can ably take down your gaming opponents without losing a single frame. Like any premium quality laptop, the N55SF-A1 is pricey, which is why I would look into the Editors' Choice Dell XPS 15z (Microsoft) before making a buying decision.
