Cricket's Huawei Mercury Ice gets redesigned, hitting Radio Shack Sep. 5
Huawei has redesigned, renamed and re-released the Mercury (aka the Huawei Honor), and Cricket is bringing it to Radio Shack on September 5. In addition to the new handle, the phone's face is now offered in a pearl white, and just like we told you yesterday, unlimited MUVE music is part of the package. Fifty dollars a month for unlimited talk, text, data, and music streaming isn't a bad deal at all.
Unfortunately, the software doesn't seem to have been updated and it's still running on Gingerbread under Huawei's tweaks. We've got no information about any pricing, but we expect it to be priced competitively. We just heard back from our tipster, and we now know that the Mercury Ice will check in at $149.99 -- contract free.
Certainly this is no barn burner, but with a fairly decent Ice Cream Sandwich ROM in the wild and a respectable hacking community, it may be worth traveling to your local Radio Shack to have a look. There's a couple more pics after the break

Windows Phone 8 may land October 29th, just days after its desktop brother
Word on the street is that Windows Phone 8 will get its official launch on October 29th. When asked for confirmation, Microsoft issued a pretty standard "no comment," which leads us to believe there might actually be something to this rumor. With Windows 8 slated to land on October 26th, we wouldn't be surprised to see its portable counterpart hit the market just a few days later, as ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley is suggesting. October is already expected to be a rather hectic month for Microsoft, with launch of countless Windows 8 tablets scheduled. Putting WP8 out alongside its first batch of handsets (hello ATIV S!) would only make sense, really. We can think of a reason or two that Microsoft might want to utterly dominate a few news cycles.

Position: The School of Government invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant or associate professor level that will specialize in development finance. Candidates for the position should possess a Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Planning, Public Policy, Public Administration, or a closely related field. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated knowledge and expertise in planning methods, real estate development, and development finance.
Responsibilities include teaching, conducting applied research, and advising public officials about the critical issues and fiscal impact of decisions relating to financing and supporting growth and development in North Carolina. Practical knowledge of the mechanics of public financing of infrastructure, private real estate development at the project level, and economic/fiscal impact analysis of growth decisions is preferred. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a practical understanding of and research interest in the following:
? Analyzing the fiscal consequences of various planning and growth management options, both at the broad state and community policy scale (e.g., the fiscal implications of low-density sprawl versus redevelopment or walkable development) and at the project level (e.g., project/program financing and fiscal impact analysis for individual projects).
? Describing the public financing options for infrastructure to support various approaches to growth and development, to include practical experience with structuring and marketing public debt (e.g., factors influencing bond markets, available marketing vehicles for bonds, taxable vs. tax-exempt issuances, interest rate options, and the role of rating agencies).
? Evaluating the public fiscal impact and value to private developers of community and economic development finance tools employed by state and local governments in connection with growth and development decisions, such as development incentives, state tax credits for redevelopment, municipal service districts, and tax increment and other value-capture financing.
This faculty member will have the opportunity to work closely with the School?s Development Finance Initiative (DFI) (http://www.sog.unc.edu/node/220), which partners with local governments in North Carolina to attract private investment for transformative projects by providing specialized finance and development expertise.
Faculty appointments in the School of Government are 12-month, rather than 9-month academic year. Work is centered in Chapel Hill but will require some in-state travel.

This article discusses the specific sub-field of digital forensics and the types of crimes that would need digital forensics for an investigation.
Digital Forensics
This sub-field of forensics examines data and information from computer storage media so that it may be used as evidence in a court of law or to answer a specific legal question as it may need.
For example in private investigations, digital forensics investigator may use digital forensics at the request of a private attorney for a defendant in a public case. And evidence may be gathered to prove that an employee is using company resources for personal private business use such as selling goods online or visiting the site that is against the company rules and regulation about Information technology. In this case, the employee may be subject to disciplinary action by the company, more personal liability, and perhaps criminal liability.
More so, evidence that proves an employee has violated an employment agreement. For example, evidence may be gathered that proves an employee accessed records or other information without authorization. It may also give that one employee has harassed another employee or perhaps stolen company information.
While public investigations require digital forensics only when a crime has been committed and computers can be used in crimes in one of the following ways, such as, Crimes associated with the prevalence of computers i.e. copyright violations, crimes in which computer is the instrument of the crime or crime in which computer are incidental to another crime such as using it to store illegal records and crimes in which the computer is the target such as crimes that involve stealing information from a computer or denial of service crimes.
Digital Evidence Collection
The collection of digital evidence may have several prominent roles in collection. These roles may include:
?Physical Technology Collection:
Investigators will collect the physical media. Physical media is any technology that stores data or information. E.g. hard disks, PDAs, flash and other electronic devices.
?Physical Media Analysis:
Investigators will analyze the physical evidence for finger prints or other evidence found on the surfaces of the physical technology. This role requires a deep understanding of the technology and may be able to aid the roles of digital evidence collection and digital evidence analysis even when the physical device is severely damaged.
?Digital Evidence Collection:
Investigators will collect the digital data from the physical device. Here, the evidence is the full set of files, folders, and bits stored on the physical media.
?Digital Evidence Analysis:
Investigators will analyze the data collected. Analysis of digital evidence may show hidden information.
Digital Evidence
Digital evidence is both the full set of bits, bytes, and blocks retrieved from the technology. It is also any subset of that full set such as e-mail, log files, text documents, spreadsheets, and other files.
Digital evidence has several unique challenges and questions that must be addressed. The highest challenge is found in modern computers which are implanted as multi-user systems with potentially hundreds of users. Since evidence must conclusively show facts in an investigation, it becomes critical to clear up ambiguities of who owns the data, how the data came to be on the system, and who or what originated the data.
Another concern is the legal issues surrounding the collection of evidence from privately owned devices such as cell phones in private investigations as well the expectation of privacy for employees using company provided resources. While no clear answers have emerged, many businesses specify the proper use of their assets and need employees to waive any such rights to privacy on company assets as part of their employment contract.
Furthermore, this issue has recently become more complicated with the onset of free publicly available encryption technologies. This specific question is whether or not a user retains an expectation of privacy by using encryption on company assets. Clearly, the company has the right to the encrypted version of the data; but does the company have the right to mandate the employee offer an unencrypted version? Subsequently, can a person be ordered by a court of law to give a password to law enforcement to decrypt the digital evidence?
One may be tempted to argue that no digital bit has ever been seen, so plain sight is not possible and not an issue. This issue of privacy raises the question of ?plain sight? while collecting evidence from digital sources. Others may argue that a permit to collect any digital evidence stored on a disk or computer device is enough to collect any and all evidence from a computer for any crime.
The plain sight doctrine is best interpreted conservatively so that any seizure of evidence of one crime revealed during the search for evidence for another crime should be then justified by a permit.

Typhoon pounds South Korea, smashes ships; 8 dead
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? A powerful typhoon pounded South Korea with strong winds and heavy rain Tuesday as it churned up rough seas that smashed two fishing ships into rocks, killing at least five fishermen and forcing the coast guard to perform a daring rescue for the survivors.
Rescuers saved 12 fishermen and were still searching for 10 missing from the Chinese ships that hit rocks off South Korea's southern Jeju island.
Separately, at least three other people died as Typhoon Bolaven knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of South Koreans, canceled flights and temporarily halted joint war games by U.S. and South Korean military forces.
North Korea, which is still struggling to rebuild from massive floods and a devastating drought before that, was next in the typhoon's path. State media reported the country was being lashed by heavy rain and strong wind Tuesday.
Off Jeju island, dangerous waves kept rescue vessels from approaching the Chinese fishing ships. The coast guard used a special gun to shoot rope to one ship so officers could pull themselves over and bring the fishermen back to shore, coast guard spokesman Ko Chang-keon said.
Eighteen fishermen survived. Twelve were rescued by the coast guard and the others swam or were washed ashore.
South Korea issued a storm warning for the capital, Seoul, as Bolaven battered the country's south and west, knocking over street lights and church spires and ripping signs from stores. A large container box crushed an apartment janitor to death, a woman fell to her death from a rooftop where she kept dried red peppers and a third person died after bricks hit a house, according to disaster and fire officials.
Strong wind gusts left Seoul streets covered with leaves, garbage and branches. More than 15,000 schools cancelled classes, and businesses and homes taped windows or pasted the glass with wet newspapers to keep them from shattering.
More than 330,000 South Korean households lost power, the government said, and more than 70 were left homeless because of floods or storm damage. Nearly 200 flights were canceled.
In North Korea, Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency reported gale force winds and heavy rain in many parts of the country. Big rainstorms often mean catastrophe in the North because of poor drainage, deforestation and decrepit infrastructure.
North Korea is still trying to help people with food, shelter, health care and clean water after heavy flooding in July, according to a recent United Nations situation report. More than 170 died nationwide, and tens of thousands of homes were destroyed in the floods, according to official North Korean accounts.
Many flood victims still live in tents with limited access to water and other basic facilities, the U.N. report said, and there is worry about increased malnutrition in coming weeks. Seoul's Unification Ministry approved a trip Wednesday by two South Korean aid groups to visit the North Korean city of Kaesong for talks on flood aid.
Weather officials had warned that Bolaven would be the strongest typhoon to hit the region in several years, but its gusts weren't as powerful as predicted.
The typhoon hit the southern Japanese island of Okinawa on Monday, injuring four people but doing less damage than feared before moving off to sea. More than 75,000 households lost power.
Farther south, another typhoon, Tembin, doubled back and hit Taiwan three days after drenching the same region before blowing out to sea. Fierce winds and rain toppled coconut trees in the beach resort town of Hengchun.
In Manila, the Philippine weather agency reissued typhoon warnings to residents and fishermen for Tembin, which blew out of the archipelago over the weekend. Fishing boats in the north were urged not to venture out to sea while larger ships were warned of possible big waves and heavy rains.

Recreation deaths rise in southern Alberta amid beautiful but deadly ...
As Calgary enjoys one of the warmest summers to come along in a decade, a jump in recreation-related deaths cast a pall over an otherwise glorious season.
First responders and rescue experts were kept busy with one of the most active, and deadly, recreation seasons in recent years.
Preliminary statistics show a 56 per cent increase in the number of drowning and recreation-related deaths in Alberta this summer compared with 2010.
These ?unintentional deaths? were the result of activities such as boating, swimming, horseback riding, climbing, hiking, biking and in-line skating, according to data tracked by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
In 2010, there were nine deaths in the province between June and August as a result of recreational activity.
So far this year, approximately 14 people have died.
Calgary and southern rural Alberta led the province with eight deaths, including at least two drownings.
There was just one recreation-related death in Calgary during the summer months in 2010.
The preliminary figures could increase as fatality inquiries are completed.
When people are injured or missing in the backcountry of Kananaskis, mountain safety specialist Mike Koppang is often the first to get the call.
Koppang was among the crew to recover fallen Calgary climbers Ranjit Sidhu, 31, and Jane Vuong, 25, who died last month after falling nearly 100 metres while rappelling down Heart Mountain Creek.
?The recovery missions are certainly the toughest,? Koppang said.
?We certainly don?t like doing recoveries. It?s never something you?re excited to go and do but it?s part of the job.?
?It?s important that we can reunite a family. It?s important that people get that closure in the event of a tragic accident where there is a fatality.?
After a slow start to the season, Koppang said wayward recreationists kept his crew very busy.
In addition to mountain rescues, Kananaskis Public Safety Specialists were called to three fatal drownings and conducted dozens of water rescues along the Bow and Sheep rivers.
?It?s challenging but also very rewarding,? he said.
STARS air-ambulance crews are often called to some of the worst recreation-related incidents.
Within eight minutes of receiving a call, STARS can have a crew in the air en route to the scene, said STARS spokesperson Mike Haska.
?In the summer we?ll see an increase in scene calls because people are doing recreational activities or they?re out on the highways,? Haska said.
He estimates that about 10 per cent of calls are for recreation-related incidents.
?It?s very seasonal, in the summer there?s more horseback riding incidents, more water-incidents, people diving and boating,? Haska said.
?That?s why we try to drive home the message about safety ? a helmet or a life-jacket can make the difference between an injury and severe injury or death.?

Ron Paul's Convention Tribute Could Bring Israel Problems For GOP
Mitt Romney?s campaign announced Friday that Ron Paul would receive a video tribute at the convention ? part of an effort to appease Paul supporters and to highlight Romney?s supposedly warm relationship with the Texas congressman. But Paul?s opposition to aid to Israel, his dismissal of Iran?s nuclear program and his newsletters? shout-outs to antisemitic conspiracy theories could complicate the GOP?s outreach to Jewish voters.
Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch, an Obama supporter and one the most prominent pro-Israel voices in the Democratic Party, said Paul?s convention role drags down the Republican brand among Jewish voters.
?This will make it easier for me when I go to Florida and talk about not only the fact that the Republicans want to destroy Medicare and Social Security and Medicaid and the right of abortion ? they also allow someone who I see as an old David Duke to join their ranks,? Koch said. ?I?ll be there talking primarily to the Jewish community, and I think they will understand what that means.?
Koch has broken with the president in the past over Israel. In 2011, he endorsed Republican candidate Bob Turner in a special House election last year, a move aimed at pushing the White House closer the Israel.
Romney often uses Israel as a wedge issue against Obama. After a trip to Israel last month, he ran ads challenging the White House to break with bipartisan past precedent and move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem. But Romney has overlooked his and Paul?s policy differences in favor of stressing their friendship.
?Rep. Paul?s people came to us and said they?d like to do a short tribute to him, and we said absolutely, it would be a good time to do that,? Romney strategist Russ Schriefer told reporters on Friday, citing the ?mutual respect? between Paul and Romney.
David Harris, president of the National Jewish Democratic Council, told TPM that Romney?s embrace of Paul at the convention was ?profoundly disturbing and utterly unsurprising? and urged pro-Israel Republicans to walk out during the Paul tribute.
?The GOP has utterly failed the ethics and moral test of dealing with Paul,? he said.
Nonpartisan and Republican Jewish groups have clashed with Paul in the past as have pro-Israel conservative pundits. During the primaries, conservative Washington Post blogger Jennifer Rubin called the GOP?s failure to isolate Paul ?appalling to those familiar with his racist and anti-Semitic newsletters? and said his success ?should be an object lesson to the party in general and to the other candidates specifically about treating him respectfully.?
The Republican Jewish Coalition barred Paul from a candidate forum last year, citing his ?misguided and extreme views.? But the RJC seemed reluctant to even acknowledge Paul?s inclusion.
?We are pleased that Ron Paul was denied any formal speaking role at the convention and that the RNC has worked so that his name will not even be put in nomination,? RJC executive director Matt Brooks told TPM in a statement. ?This reflects the broad consensus that Ron Paul and his views are outside of the mainstream of the Republican Party.?
Richard Grenell, a former spokesman for Romney on foreign policy, told TPM that ?Ron Paul?s commitment to limit government?s involvement in our daily lives is the future of the Republican Party.?
He added: ?I only wish Ron Paul?s foreign policy positions could be outsourced to John Bolton.?

WNV had become "old news" among the public and the media. Furthermore, funding to support research, training and education, and surveillance and vector control had waned. Now there is an urgent imperative to redouble our efforts to understand and control this dangerous virus. Vector-Borne and Zoonotic Diseases, a major peer-reviewed journal from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers, has published numerous timely and informative studies on WNV, and articles on the topic published since 2007 are available free on the Journal website at http://www.liebertpub.com/vbz through September 10 to help disseminate vital information about this deadly virus that continues to infect and kill people across the U.S. and abroad.
Texas is currently a hotspot for WNV, reporting more than 336 cases and 14 deaths to date, resulting in a state of emergency and aerial spraying for mosquito control in Dallas County, but several other states are also reporting fatal West Nile cases.

"It's So Miami": Why the Florida City's New Slogan ... - Travel + Leisure

With a spritely klatch of scantily-clad models flying around a pop-up pool party, slapping around beach balls and cavorting to a live deejay's techno music, Florida?s most hyperactive playground kicked off a fitting new tourism campaign, ?It?s So Miami,? on a recent balmy afternoon in New York City?s Union Square. The slogan is clearly more about reinforcing the Latin-infused city?s authority as America?s preeminent destination for escapism than proffering anything newfangled or undiscovered. But the irony of Miami?s decision to double down on its hedonistic caricature is that the city truly is emerging as a genuine cultural hub with gravitas and depth.
In concert with fast-changing neighborhoods and a dynamic culinary revolution, a crop of new luxury hotels (like the new SLS South Beach by Philippe Starck and an outpost of The James opening in October), architecturally dazzling art spaces, and a commuter rail connecting Downtown to the airport are changing perceptions. The city known for throwing a rollicking f?te is undergoing a dramatic reinvention of substance. The canary in the coalmine for any metropolis on the precipice of a cultural moment is the addition of a curvaceous Frank Gehry-designed building to its skyline. In that vein, the New World Center performing arts venue debuted this year in the heart of Miami Beach, Gehry?s first contribution to the city?s landscape. 2013 will see the unveiling of the $220 million P?rez Art Museum Miami in Biscayne Bay, while the state-of-the-art Miami Science Museum (MiaSci) is slated to open next door in 2015.
For all the fun Miami?s party culture offers weekend trippers, it?s not a stretch to say that ?It?s So Miami? might soon conjure a much different image than the tourism board initially intended. And what?s so wrong with that??

Snack Series: Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake ... - Disney Food Blog
I?ve fallen into a bit of a habit when it comes to walking the Boardwalk in Walt Disney World, and it always includes heading into the Boardwalk Bakery to check out what?s new!
This big bakery with a teensy-tiny little sales area for purchasing goodies is a hidden gem and hot-spot when it comes to unique, can?t-get-em-anywhere-else sweets and savories like the Cheesecake Brownie and Mickey Face Cake.
Atmosphere
As I said, while the bakery itself is large (they create baked goods and wedding cakes for the area), the area where guests can actually purchase things is very small. Almost an afterthought.

And as much as I love Boardwalk Bakery, the big detractor is the lack of indoor seating. Rain or shine, sweltering or less sweltering, you have to take your purchase outside to eat it. Sure there?s a bit of an overhang, but that hardly constitutes indoor seating.

Still, it can be very nice ? should the weather cooperate ? to sit outside and enjoy the view of Crescent Lake. There?s also great people watching to be had here! (If you see me say Hi ? I?ll be the one with the camera who?s super sweaty and probably running late for something?and I?ll likely still have chocolate on my face from something or other.)

Still, this is a terrific spot to have in your back pocket as you head off to a busy day in the parks. They have a variety of breakfast and lunch items, and you can even use your Disney Dining Plan credits here for Quick Service meals or snacks.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake
When I was at the Bakery this time, a couple of things caught my eye. First: The Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake, which my good friend Carrie had told me was her very favorite and that she hadn?t seen it there for a while.

I?ll admit, though, I was skeptical. I fell in LOVE with that Boardwalk Bakery Peanut Butter Cupcake I reviewed last year, and I?ve been sad to not see it back in the case on my recent visits.
But, since this was chocolate and peanut butter as well, I knew it must be sampled!

The cake is a stack of equal parts chocolate cake and rich peanut butter filling. And I do mean equal parts. There?s no skimping on the peanut butter frosting here. And for those who want to know (like I would), the peanut butter frosting is thick and rich. It?s more like a peanut butter cookie dough flavor and texture than a whipped cream frosting texture. So, in the world of peanut butter frosting, this ranks an 8 out of 10, I?d say.

The top is a chocolate glaze that?s more ganache than frosting, and it sits right on top of a peanut butter layer. The cake is garnished with more of the peanut butter filling and tiny chocolate shavings and croquant on the ends, which provides a nice texture contrast.

And it?s just as delicious as it looks! The creamy peanut butter filling isn?t too sweet, and there?s definitely enough here to share. While I don?t love it as much as my beloved cupcake, it?s certainly delicious and well worth the trip over there if you have a craving or snack credits to burn!

After that, I opted for the Key Lime Pie. I just can?t bring myself to pass up key lime pie?unless it?s so obviously artificially flavored and colored that it?s neon green. And even then, I?ll still take a bite just in case.

This one looks a little ?processed? to me in terms of its perfect finishes. I tend to like my key lime pie all messy and graham crakery and crumbly, and this was not that.

The pie is a standard wedge shape, and it?s topped with whipped cream topping in a geometric dimple design. It also has a graham cracker crust, which, of course, it should. (In my world, all key lime pie would be like Olivia?s Key Lime Tart, which has think graham cracker crust all the way up all sides.) But?what?s this?? There?s just a thin crust on the bottom and NO crust on the back?!? Who signed off on this?!?

OK, quelling my rage about the lack-of-crust, I dug into the pie itself. While I much prefer tart key lime pie, this one is actually quite sweet.

SO, I won?t be getting this key lime pie again. Even though it didn?t taste bad at all, it just wasn?t for me. I guess I?d better stick with messy and crackery and crumbly.
Overall
While not exactly ?atmospheric,? Boardwalk Bakery continues to be one of my favorite spots for unique and interesting treats and eats.
You really never know what you?re going to find here most of the time (the cupcakes are always changing out, and always good), and with the Disney Dining Plan in place, it?s a nice little spot to grab breakfast or lunch on your way in or out of the park.
As for these two items ? you know I?ll be back for that peanut butter cake, but I think I?ll look elsewhere for my pie.
