Video: Own a piece of Hollywood ?for a pretty penny

>>> finally tonight, a look at the increasingly big business of celebrity auctions. it has been a busy season with high end bidders reaching for the stars , and coming this week, what could be the biggest auction of the year in one of the ritziest zip codes in america. here is nbc's kristen dahlgren.

>> reporter: when never before seen home movies of marilyn monroe on the set of the 1959 classic "some like it hot" surfaced recently, it wasn't because someone just found them in the attic. this was part of a well crafted marketing campaign, the whole movies are going on sale.

>> starts at 500.

>> reporter: lauren moore of tinseltown's treasures are hitting the auction block.

>> look at that. exclusively designed for elvis presley .

>> these are our artifacts.

>> reporter: this week, one of the largest collections of hollywood memorabilia ever sold will be auctioned off in beverly hills .

>> there is something for everything, contemporary hollywood to vintage hollywood and to lady gaga right to john lennon .

>> reporter: want george harrison 's suit from "it's a hard day 's night," cyndi lauper 's " girls just want to have fun " frock, they can be yours for a price. hollywood auctions like these have become big business . last month, michael jackson 's "thriller" jacket was expected to go for about $200,000. it ended up selling for 1.8 million. and when elizabeth taylor 's jewels hit the auction block next month, they're expected to fetch as much as $50 million. and all of that money hasn't gone unnoticed. with real estate tanking and wall street on the roller coaster, some serious investors say owning a piece of hollywood isn't just sentimental, it is smart. michael eisenburg has been collecting hollywood memorabilia for 20 years. this week he has his eyes on these pictures from marilyn monroe 's first photo shoot .

>> tomorrow morning, you can lose 10%. it is very hard to go down 10% for a piece of mim deemorabilmemorabilia it could go for $10,000. while it may sound like a lot, some optimistic investors with stars in their eyes are hoping one day all this stuff will be worth much, much more. kristen dahlgren, nbc news, beverly hills .

'Amateur' Astronomer Snaps Pic of Planet-Forming Disk

He believes 'amateur' means "one lacking in experience and competence in an art or science." In fact, in this context 'amateur' means "not compensated," "not for hire," or "one who engages in a pursuit, study, science, or sport as a pastime rather than as a profession."

Actually, I think in this case it's more along the lines he's been doing it so long, he's hardly some noob with a new telescope, but he's not a 'professional' either.

If you look here [pbase.com], that man has some pretty serious astro-photography creds.

I don't think the article means to imply he's some hack who got lucky, but that he is, technically, an 'amateur'. There's no snark in calling him an amateur... in fact, the last paragraph of TFA says:

My sincere and hearty congratulations to Rolf Olsen for achieving this (and you should look through his gallery of astrophotographs; they're beautiful and some are astonishing). I think it's a milestone in 'amateur' astronomy, and it goes to show you that sometimes, the sky is not the limit.

Seriously, read the article again... this man is an 'amateur' in only the sense that you describe, and the article isn't saying anything else. He's certainly a competent astronomer (and one with the pleasure of living in an area that affords him some awesome viewing).

He's not an academic, but he is an 'amateur' -- the quotes seem to belittle the word amateur more than the man being discussed. I think you're mistaken to say " the grandeur of Rolf's contribution to science is sullied by other's ignorance"... TFA is holding him in the highest esteem.

Libyan official says oil output increasing fast (AP)

TRIPOLI, Libya ? Libya's oil production is quickly increasing and now stands at more than 600,000 barrels a day, a prominent Libyan oil expert said Thursday.

Ali Tarhouni, who just stepped down as the oil and finance minister, said he expects production to reach 700,000 barrels a day within a few days.

He held his government post until a new transitional government was sworn in Thursday. He said he refused an offer to serve in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Abdurrahim el-Keib because of the many challenges it will face in establishing governance and economic stability.

Before the civil war, Libya was producing about 1.6 million barrels per day. Tarhouni said he expects production to reach about 1.2 to 1.3 million barrels by next June, when elections are scheduled to be held.

"That would be tremendous," he said.

Tarhouni told reporters in Tripoli that he will not hold any official position for now. He said he plans instead to travel around the country to give lectures and meet with young people in an effort to encourage civil society and democracy.

Pakistan's envoy to U.S. quits over coup memo (Reuters)

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) ? Pakistan's ambassador to the United States resigned on Tuesday, days after a Pakistani-American businessman said the envoy was behind a memo that accused the Pakistani military of plotting a coup in May.

Envoy Husain Haqqani said in a Twitter message that he had sent his resignation to the prime minister. State television said his resignation had been accepted.

"I have resigned to bring closure to this meaningless controversy threatening our fledgling democracy," he said in a statement released after his resignation.

"I have served Pakistan and Pakistani democracy to the best of my ability and will continue to do so."

Businessman Mansoor Ijaz, writing in a column in the Financial Times on Oct. 10, said a senior Pakistani diplomat had asked that a memo be delivered to the Pentagon with a plea for U.S. help to stave off a military coup in the days after the May 2 U.S. raid that killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

Ijaz later identified the diplomat as Haqqani.

No evidence has emerged that the military was plotting a coup and the Pentagon at the time dismissed the memo as not credible. Haqqani denies involvement in the memo. (http://r.reuters.com/wes25s)

"I still maintain that I did not conceive, write or distribute the memo," Haqqani told Reuters shortly after he resigned. "This is not about the memo," he continued. "This is about bigger things."

He declined to comment further.

Haqqani's resignation followed a meeting with Pakistan President Asif Zardari, the nation's powerful army chief General Ashfaq Kayani and its intelligence head, Lieutenant-General Ahmad Shuja Pasha.

A spokesman for the prime minister's office said Haqqani was asked to resign and there would be an investigation into the memo.

Haqqani is a former journalist who covered Afghanistan's civil war and later wrote a book on the role of radical Islam and the military in Pakistan.

With his crisp suits and colorful turns of phrase, he has developed close ties with Washington's top power brokers as Pakistan's envoy since 2008.

In the past year, he has sought to ease tempers in both capitals and find common ground during an extraordinarily tense period in U.S.-Pakistani relations that included the bin Laden raid, the jailing of a CIA contractor, and U.S. accusations that Pakistan backed a militant attack on the U.S. Embassy in Kabul.

He is close to Zardari but estranged from Pakistan's military.

Tensions between Pakistan's civilian government and military have bedeviled the nuclear-armed South Asian country for almost its entire existence, with the military ruling the country for more than half of its 64-year history after a series of coups.

Haqqani's resignation was seen by many analysts as further weakening the civilian government, which is already beset by allegations of corruption and incompetence.

"They (the military) may expect much more from the government, much more beyond the resignation of Husain Haqqani, because they see that everybody perceived to be involved in this affair will be seen as anti-military and by implication anti-state," said Imtiaz Gul, a security analyst in Islamabad.

IMPACT ON U.S.-PAKISTAN TIES?

Haqqani's successor might include a diplomat with a less complicated relationship with the military, perhaps Pakistani Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir or Pakistan's envoy to the United Nations, Hussain Haroon.

"Whether Pakistan's people or its military will be represented in DC will become evident when Husain Haqqani's replacement is announced," Ali Dayan Hasan, representative for Human Rights Watch in Pakistan, said on Twitter.

Vali Nasr, a former senior State Department official who worked on Pakistan, said the crux of the affair was not Haqqani's role but whether Zardari would come to be seen as having directed the memo, which would imply the president had gone outside Pakistan to request urgent assistance against his own military.

"At what point would the issue escalate to Haqqani was acting on Zardari's behest? That would really create massive tension between the military and Zardari."

Nasr said the issue would be unlikely to have a major impact on the strained U.S.-Pakistan relationship unless it seriously weakened or toppled the civilian government.

As U.S. officials focus on thorny diplomatic and security issues with Pakistan, Haqqani's departure did not immediately make many visible ripples in Washington. The State Department said it had not been notified of Haqqani's departure and the Pentagon declined comment.

Democratic Senator John Kerry, who has been heavily involved in U.S.-Pakistani relations, said he was sorry to learn of Haqqani's resignation.

Kerry said he respected the Pakistani government's decision but that Haqqani would be missed "as we continue to work through the ups and downs of our relationship."

Ijaz said initially he believed Haqqani was acting under the authority of Zardari, but said later he was not sure how involved Zardari was in the affair.

Mark Siegel, a lobbyist who represents the Pakistani government in Washington, said Zardari called him when the Financial Times story appeared, asking his law firm to initiate libel proceedings against the newspaper and Ijaz.

Siegel advised Zardari against filing a case because he judged it difficult for a public figure to win a libel case in a U.S. court.

"He was irate and said the memo was a total fabrication," Siegel said. Siegel, who has known Zardari for 25 years, said he was absolutely certain that Zardari had known nothing about the memo.

Tales from Asia: Benson Henderson?s tour through Korea and Japan

Tales from Asia: Benson Henderson?s tour through Korea and Japan

UFC lightweight Benson Henderson will fight Frankie Edgar for the title in February, but before that, he is touring through Japan and Korea to visit with troops, meet media, and most importantly, meet his family. Read his exclusive travel blog posts at Cagewriter.

Last week, I was honored to be asked by the UFC to represent them in Korea and Japan.? This is my first time overseas, which these days seems to put me in a minority. But I am looking forward to the great events and festivities that are lined up.

The main purpose of this trip is to visit with many of our American troops here in Korea. These men and women do so much for our country, and have to spend so much time away from their loved ones to accomplish that. We sometimes take that for granted.

I also wanted to take this trip for a very personal reason. I am a second-generation Korean-American, and I am visiting my mother's home country. My Oma (mom) is accompanying me on this trip. Over the weekend, she will get to see many of her family members for the first time in years, and I will be meeting them for the first time EVER! Tales from Asia: Benson Henderson?s tour through Korea and JapanBeing able to share this trip with my Oma makes it so much more special.

I never really thought I'd come visit Korea until I was much older and retired, but the UFC has made it a reality.? As I am writing this, we are driving through a very beautiful and slightly overwhelming downtown Seoul.

So far, I've done a few interviews and had a chance to visit Camp Carroll in Daegu. There I took part in a mini-MMA clinic with the Army Combative Instructors, shook some hands and signed a lot of autographs. These men and women are huge fans of MMA and the UFC.

I've also had a chance to speak with a lot of soldiers personally. Getting a feel of how much they are sacrificing, I'm completely blown away and honored that I could come out and support them in return. That holds true even more this time of year, with the holidays around the corner. I'll be visiting a lot more bases this week, and having Thanksgiving dinner with the troops too, before heading off to Japan to promote my next fight.

Follow Henderson as he travels on Twitter.

EPA Delays Proposal for Greenhouse Gas Standards Again (ContributorNetwork)

According to Reuters, the Environmental Protection Agency has announced it will delay its proposal of greenhouse gas limits on oil refineries. Following a court settlement with both states and environmental organizations, the EPA had been given until mid-December to propose these limits on refineries.

However, the delay in the presenting of the proposal is due to the fact the agency needs more time to develop the greenhouse gas standards and construct plans on how oil refineries can cut down on emissions. Here are some facts about the events leading up to the recent proposal delay and the criticism the EPA is facing:

* The EPA initially announced its plans to set standards for power plant and oil refinery greenhouse gas emissions in December 2010, according to Scientific American.

* Collectively the country's 500 fossil fuel power plants and 150 oil refineries emit about 2.4 billion metric tons, or 40 percent of the nation's total emissions, of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases every single year.

* The decision was the result of two major proposed settlement agreements and EPA agreed to set new source performance standards for industrial categories.

* The Tucson Citizen reported that in March, House Republicans attempted to strip the EPA of its ability to use the Clean Air Act from regulating carbon dioxide emissions from power plants and oil refineries.

* The Energy Tax Prevention Act of 2011 would bar the EPA from imposing these rules, causing President Barack Obama to most likely veto it since it goes against his climate agenda.

* The GOP noted that one of the reasons it was seeking to push this bill is because of rising gas prices in the U.S., noted USA Today.

* Another Reuters article reported that environmental organizations that originally sued to the EPA to enforce the emissions standards have given the agency several extensions for its proposal.

* The most recent extension was in October, but other delays were issued in June and September as well.

* The EPA made the delays in order to gain more time to develop and outline the specific plans after speaking with numerous businesses, states that would be affected by the changes, and environmental organizations in support of the rules.

* Other lawsuits have been filed to prevent the EPA from imposing standards, according to the Dallas Business Journal.

* Additionally, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott and Republican Gov. Rick Perry have spoken out against the rules, saying that the changes and stricter standards would kill jobs for Americans.

Rachel Bogart provides an in-depth look at current environmental issues and local Chicago news stories. As a college student from the Chicago suburbs pursuing two science degrees, she applies her knowledge and passion to both topics to garner further public awareness.

Solar Eclipse on Friday Could Wow Small Audience

News | Space

This will be the fourth time that a new moon will orbit between the sun and Earth to cause a solar eclipse in 2011, just one eclipse shy of the annual max

A partial solar eclipse will be visible in southern South Africa, Antarctica, Tasmania, and most of New Zealand. Image: Starry Night Software

This Friday (Nov. 25), a rather large partial eclipse of the sun will be on view ? but only for a relatively small audience.

This will be the fourth time that a new moon will orbit between the sun and Earth to cause a solar eclipse in 2011, just one eclipse shy of the maximum for the number of solar eclipses in a given year.?

The first eclipse on Jan. 4 coincided with sunrise across Europe.

Some Alaskans and Canadians shared a view of a partially obscured sun on the afternoon of June 1. [Photos: The First Solar Eclipse of 2011]

And perhaps just a few penguins experienced a very slight eclipse a month later off Lutzlow-Holm Bay on the coast of Antarctica.

On Friday, the moon's penumbral, or outer, shadow will brush the southern belly of the Earth, initially touching down in the South Atlantic Ocean, about 600 miles (1,000 kilometers) a southwest of Cape Town, but only managing to encompass the southern and western portion of South Africa, completely missing Lesotho and barely grazing the border of Namibia. The sun will be seen rising with a dent in its upper right rim.

The axis of the Earth's shadow, containing the cone of darkness known as the umbra, from where we could see a total solar eclipse, misses Earth entirely, passing at its nearest, only about 0.05 of the Earth's radius, or about 210 miles (340 km) out in space.

So the depth of this partial eclipse is greater than the three others that preceded it. At greatest eclipse, 90.5 percent of the sun's diameter will be covered as seen from the place nearest to the shadow axis, at a point in the Bellingshausen Sea along the west side of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Here, the sun will be seen to dip to the southern horizon at the "midnight" of its 24-hour southern late spring day, and as it slowly ascends still very low to the south-southeast horizon it turns into a delicate boat-shaped crescent in eclipse; the horizon along which the dazzling boat goes rocking is that of "The Ice" (a nickname for Antarctica, being "on the ice").

As the penumbra slides under the bottom of the Earth, the partial eclipse is visible in varying extent across the icy land continent and just as it begins to slide back out into space it (just barely) manages to pass over Tasmania as well as portions of New Zealand's South Island. In fact, the last contact of the shadow with Earth occurs just to the west of the South Island, in the Tasman Sea.

Coming attractions
If you have already obtained a calendar for 2012, be sure to put a big red circle around May 20.?

That is the date of the next solar eclipse and it promises to be a spectacular event.? It will be an annular ("ring") eclipse that will be visible from parts of eight western U.S. states during the late-afternoon hours.?

For those living in parts of New Mexico and west Texas, the setting sun will be transformed into a blazing "ring of fire," in some cases lasting for more than five minutes. And across much of North America, the exception being those near and along the Atlantic Coast, the sun will appear partially eclipsed.?

Across the Pacific for parts of China and Japan, the annular eclipse will also be visible (Tokyo is directly in the eclipse track), although for Asia, being positioned to the left (west) of the International Date Line, this event will take place on the morning of May 21.?

Needless to say, in contrast to next Friday, next May's solar eclipse will have a huge viewing audience.?

Chris Brown Takes It 'All Back' At 2011 AMAs

Breezy performs a pair of F.A.M.E. tunes, also including 'Say It With Me.'
By James Dinh

Chris Brown knows how to put on a dance-tastic performance. And that's exactly what the pop&B entertainer did at the 2011 American Music Awards on Sunday (November 20).

Donning a white T-shirt and jeans, Brown began his performance with his slow jam "All Back" alongside his band. With just a microphone stand in tow, the singer twirled around the stage and displayed some rather raw and emotional vocals. While it may have appeared to be a rather basic set, Breezy's performance turned high-tech when the tune came to a close and the stage turned black.

Breezy continued his performance set with another F.A.M.E. tune, "Say It With Me." Keeping in sync with a computer-generated backdrop, the singer mirrored some Michael Jackson-esque moves with his four background dancers. As a spotlight followed the singer, CB pulled out an over-the-top choreographed sequence, full of backflips and spins that echoed similar backdrop technology used during Beyoncé's "Run the World (Girls)" performance at the 2011 Billboard Music Awards.

Unfortunately for Brown, shortly after the performance, he lost his Soul/R&B Album nomination to ex-girlfriend Rihanna.

Even though Brown didn't debut new material during his AMA set, Team Breezy can expect a batch of new tracks from the R&B singer when his new album, Fortune, drops next spring.

Did you like Breezy's performance? Sound off in the comments section!

One killed as Egyptian police, protesters clash (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? At least one person was killed and more than 650 wounded in clashes between riot police and protesters in Cairo's Tahrir square on Saturday, official said, after a protest demanding the ruling military transfer power swiftly to a civilian government.

Protests also erupted in other cities, including Alexandria and Suez, witnesses said.

Egypt holds its first parliamentary election, from November 28, since president Hosni Mubarak was toppled in a popular uprising in February and parties and the ruling military are jostling for position.

Police pulled down the tents of about 100 protesters who had camped in the square overnight after a demonstration on Friday of about 50,000 people, mostly Islamists, against the military leadership.

That prompted around 5,000 protesters to return to the square and clashes erupted. Police fired rubber bullets and buildings and two cars in the square were set on fire, witnesses said. A third vehicle, close to the Arab League's headquarters, was also on fire.

"The people want to topple the regime!" hundreds of youths chanted as they rushed toward a line of police.

State news agency MENA cited the health ministry's spokesman as saying 676 people had been hurt and Ahmed Mahmoud, a 23-year-old demonstrator, died in hospital after being shot.

Riot police, who used tear gas to clear the area in the early evening, later fired more tear gas at protesters who had regained control of the square, witnesses said. Police beat protesters with batons while protesters broke off chunks of cement from sidewalks to throw at the police.

"We are fighting them non-stop," shouted one protester.

Egyptian state television said Prime Minister Essam Sharaf called on protesters in Tahrir to clear the square.

The Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party said it "denounced the break-up of the Tahrir sit-in by force. (This is) reminiscent of the practices of the defunct regime's Interior Ministry."

The April 6th Youth Movement said it opposed the use of force against peaceful protesters and demanded the interior minister quit.

The demonstrators denounced Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, the head of Egypt's ruling military council, while some criticised the Muslim Brotherhood, whom they accused of working to further their own political ends.

"We are not political parties and we hate the Brotherhood who gave up on the revolution and the people," Medhat Fawzy said. "We are Egyptian youth," he added, flashing victory signs and chanting "down down Tantawi."

In the northern port city of Alexandria demonstrators chanted against the military council: "This is their understanding of change, they beat our brothers in Tahrir!"

In the eastern city of Suez, protesters tore down banners of members of Mubarak's disbanded National Democratic Party who are running in the election.

"TROUBLEMAKERS"

State television said 40 of the wounded were police officers and said "18 troublemakers" had been arrested.

Friday's rally appeared to be the biggest Islamist challenge to military rule since the largely secular uprising that toppled Mubarak. The demonstration was mostly comprised of Brotherhood members and their harder-line Salafi rivals.

Protesters expressed anger at a draft constitution that Deputy Prime Minister Ali al-Silmi showed to political groups earlier this month which would give the army exclusive authority over its internal affairs and budget.

The election could be disrupted if parties and the government fail to resolve the row over the draft constitution that had denied parliamentary oversight of the army, potentially allowing it to defy an elected government.

As clashes raged in Tahrir square, al-Silmi and the Brotherhood appeared to be negotiating, through press statements and the state news agency, on percentages of members of parliament (MPs) needed to approve the assembly that will write the constitution.

MENA reported that al-Silmi had amended some clauses of the constitutional proposal, including one to say Egypt is a "democratic state" instead of "democratic civil state," a move likely to anger liberals who fear that a parliamentary majority could seek to turn Egypt into an Islamic state.

Al-Silmi said the committee chosen to write the constitution would not be confined to the larger groups in parliament to ensure "a constitution that reflects national consensus and receives the consent of all segments of society."

Political analyst Ezzedine Fishere said he did not expect the amendments to appease Islamist groups.

"(Islamists) see that they will get a majority in parliament and hence want total freedom in choosing the constitutional committee and writing the constitution," he said.

Analysts say Islamists could win 40 percent of parliament seats, with a big portion going to the Brotherhood.

"What is happening now is a showdown between the two factions ... an on-the-ground confrontation with each party trying to enforce its will, the military council from one end and the Islamist currents from the other," Fishere said.

MENA reported that al-Silmi had amended the constitutional proposal to say members of the constituent assembly writing the constitution would be chosen by a "majority" of elected MPs instead of his earlier announcement that they would be chosen by a "two-thirds majority."

Gingrich's business network getting second look (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Newt Gingrich calls it giving advice. Most people would call it cashing in on his prominent name.

The former House speaker has raked in millions of dollars since leaving office more than a decade ago. Now as a rising GOP presidential candidate he's facing renewed scrutiny of the intricate network of consulting firms, advocacy organizations and other businesses that, taken together, some have called Newt Inc.

"I do no lobbying of any kind. I never have. A very important point I want to make. I have never done lobbying of any kind," Gingrich told Fox News Channel this week, defending himself over questions about his time since he left the speaker's office under a political cloud in January 1999.

He has said he welcomes the scrutiny and questions over potential conflicts, yet his campaign declined an interview request from The Associated Press.

Gingrich's finances ? and the elaborate consulting and communications empire he built since leaving Congress ? are now getting a second look as the man who for years was the ultimate Washington insider campaigns as a reformer who can change Washington.

His presidential campaign imploded earlier this year but polls show him having risen just weeks before Iowa's presidential caucuses kick off the GOP nominating contests. Lingering questions about his business associations threaten that standing, which explains why Gingrich has grown increasingly defensive about his businesses as the spotlight grows brighter.

"Every contract (that) was written during the period when I was out of the office specifically said I would do no lobbying, and I offered advice," he said during a recent debate in Michigan.

He also has described himself as "historian," hired by some firms that sought advice on policy matters.

Gingrich's business network has for years given the Georgia Republican a far-reaching platform for his views.

At times, he has espoused some public policy positions that closely track the financial interests of companies that underwrite a think tank he founded, the Center for Health Transformation. He has, for example, pushed for electronic medical records and government funded medical research while collecting paychecks from pharmaceutical companies and hospital chains that backed the proposals.

Health companies paid as much as $200,000 a year in dues to the think tank, which was created in 2003 to find ways to make health care better, cheaper and more modern. It has been a significant part of Gingrich's empire, with him spending ? at one point in recent years ? one-third or more of his time on the think tank.

The Washington Post reported that it collected at least $37 million in the last eight years.

In recent days, Gingrich also has been defending himself amid the disclosure that he brought in more than $1.6 million from 1999 to 2008 to advise Freddie Mac, the federally backed mortgage giant that he routinely criticizes and that some conservatives blame for the housing crisis.

Gingrich tried to spin his consulting fees into a positive, saying: "It reminds people that I know a great deal about Washington. We just tried four years of amateur ignorance and it didn't work very well. So, having someone who actually knows Washington might be a really good thing."

During the 2008 campaign, Gingrich called on then-Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama to return campaign contributions from the mortgage company executives; Obama refused.

Yet Gingrich has been compensated for consulting work by the same group, and hasn't shown any indication that he'd return the money.

"There's a huge difference between what you do when you're in public office and you're dealing with the public trust and what you do as a private business person who has no direct power and no direct responsibility and you're sitting there offering advice," Gingrich told Fox, where he was once a paid contributor.

Gingrich is trying to move beyond the questions about Freddie Mac and is acknowledging that he has worked for some of the biggest names in business, including Microsoft, General Electric and PhRMA, a trade group that represents pharmaceutical research and biotechnology companies.

But over the years, he has used frequent opinion columns to promote some of those companies.

For example:

? Gingrich warned against specialty hospitals allowing doctors to cherry-pick easy cases, echoing concerns of the American Hospital Association and Hospital Corporation of America. The two companies helped fund Gingrich's health care think tank.

? In The Baltimore Sun and The New York Sun, Gingrich criticized congressional efforts to cut spending for the National Cancer Institute, where research dollars have helped develop drugs that earn millions of dollars for pharmaceutical companies that belong to Gingrich's think tank.

_Gingrich argued in The New York Times, Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Seattle Post-Intelligencer in 2004, and in the Chicago Tribune and again in the Times in 2005, for electronic medical records. Supporter Siemens makes a health records card, and consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton teamed on a U.S. military contract to develop electronic medical records.

The candidate may call all that old news but it may be new to voters just tuning into the presidential race.

A Beginner's Guide to Commodity Investing

A Beginner?s Guide to Commodity Investing

by Carl Delfeld, Investment U Senior Analyst
Thursday, November 17, 2011

I?ll never forget my first visit as a teenager to the commodity-trading pit of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME). The swirling bright colored jackets, the shouting and rapid hand signals (looked like arm wrestling to me) were captivating and reminded me of past family gatherings.

It was also the polar opposite of my later visit to the currency trading floor of JP Morgan at 1 Wall Street ? row after row of white shirts hunched over computer screens and dry IMF statistics.

Commodities sure looked like more fun to me.

My image of commodity markets hasn?t changed all that much since. It?s a volatile and wild ride where even a tiny bit of new information affecting supply or demand can send prices spinning. Weather, transportation costs, economic forecasts, currency movements and many other factors go into how prices change minute to minute.

I approach commodities trading cautiously since expert traders focused all day on one commodity, such as wheat, get it wrong as often as they get it right.

Still, I have to admit, the idea of making or losing a pile of money in a very short time gets my blood pumping.

So how should you approach commodities, and what should you do right now?

The Game Has Changed

Even a decade ago, most investors didn?t even think of investing in commodities except through companies like Alcoa (NYSE: AA) for aluminum, Freeport-McMoRan (NYSE: FCX) for copper, or Comstock Resources (NYSE: CRK) for natural gas.

But the game has changed.

The arrival of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and notes (ETNs) gives average investors the chance to get into the game with a just a click of the mouse.

The choices are staggering:

 • Coffee ? iPath Coffee (NYSE: JO)
 • Sugar ? iPath Sugar ETN (NYSE: SGG)
 • Lead ? iPath Lead ETN (NYSE: LD)
 • Nickel ? iPath Nickel ETN (NYSE: JJN)
 • Corn ? Teucrium Corn Fund (NYSE: CORN)
 • Grains ? iPath Grains ETN (NYSE: JJG)
 • Cotton ? iPath Cotton ETN (NYSE: BAL)
 • Tin ? iPath Tin ETN (NYSE: JJT)
 • Aluminum ? iPath Aluminum ETN (NYSE: JJU)
 • Silver ? iShares Silver Trust (NYSE: SLV)
 • Oil ? iPath S&P GSCI Crude Oil Index (NYSE: OIL)
 • Palladium ? ETFS Physical Palladium Shares (NYSE: PALL)
 • Natural gas ? iPath Natural Gas ETN (NYSE: GAZ)
 • Timber ? Claymore Beacon Global Timber Index (NYSE: CUT)
 • Livestock ? iPath Livestock ETN (NYSE: COW)

The ?Core-Explore? Commodity Strategy

Given the complexity and volatility involved in commodities, you must have an established strategy if you plan on having any success. So here?s an easy one:

 • First, having a small allocation in a broad basket of commodities in your core portfolio makes a lot of sense.

This should make your overall portfolio less volatile and help preserve capital since commodities don?t usually move lockstep with stocks. In addition, raw materials provide you with a natural inflation hedge.

A great conservative play right now would be the PowerShares DB Agricultural ETF (NYSE: DBA). These agricultural commodities are down only marginally this year and tend to be less volatile than precious or industrial metals. In addition, the long-term bull story of a world population growing at a rate of 200,000 a day plus rising incomes driving higher food prices is very convincing.

To meet this growing demand, the World Bank estimates that farms worldwide will have to produce more food in the next 50 years than it did in the previous 10,000 years.

Here are the commodity weightings in this basket:

1. Sugar: 12.44%

2. Coffee: 11.91%

3. Cocoa: 11.21%

4. Live cattle: 8.68%

5. Corn future: 8.33%

6. Soybean future: 8.14%

7. Wheat future: 5.64%

8. Corn future: 5.35%

9. Lean Hogs future: 5.19%

10. Soybean future: 4.42%

 • Second, for your trading portfolio, explore for commodities that have pulled back sharply.

So far in 2011, the perception of a weakening world economy has driven many commodities sharply lower. Nickel is down 30 percent, copper is down 24 percent and aluminum is down 17 percent so far this year. China is a big consumer of these industrial metals and concern that its economy is slowing has hit them pretty hard.

This is exactly why you should be getting interested in these industrial metals. You want to get in when markets have pulled back and, even better, when they are beginning to trend up. Keep an eye on the iPath Industrial Metals ETF (NYSE: JJM). The lower entry price gives you some downside protection but always have a sell stop in place in case markets move against you.

Now get out there and add some commodities to your global portfolio today.

Good investing,

Carl Delfeld

Study details world's worst die-off: hell on Earth (AP)

WASHINGTON ? During the world's biggest mass extinction, Earth seemed pretty close to a description of hell ? fiery, smoky and explosive ? created by massive volcanic eruptions, according to research dug up in China.

In geologic terms, it was surprisingly quick, and it may provide a scary lesson about climate change for our future, authors of the new study say. It was the third of five extinctions in world history, occurring even before dinosaurs roamed.

This extinction killed off more than three-quarters of life on the planet in an event scientists have called the Great Dying. The Chinese dig sites provide new dates and details of the event, which occurred at the end of the Permian Era. It happened 252 million years ago and may have lasted less than 100,000 years, far shorter than scientists had thought, according to the study published Thursday in the journal Science.

The study also bolsters the prevailing scientific concept that the giant die-off was caused by a massive shift in climate ? global warming, prehistoric style ? triggered by volcanic activity that is far beyond modern levels. The research also makes the case that the burst of carbon dioxide and methane thrown into the atmosphere that triggered the die-off took only about 20,000 years, less than previously thought, though the ecological damage lasted longer.

And devastating fires raged worldwide, not just where the volcanoes exploded, the paper said.

"Imagine drying out the Amazon and burning it up," said study co-author Douglas Erwin, a paleobiology curator at the Smithsonian Institution. "It certainly was a very uncomfortable time. You're killing off 75 to 90 percent of everything on the planet. It's not going to be terribly pleasant."

The air at times could be like the thick smog outside an old Eastern European power plant, Erwin said.

It was the only mass extinction in history to kill off hardy insects, Erwin said. Afterward, there were very few species left worldwide, and they had little diversity among different regions. It was only later that dinosaurs and mammals roamed the Earth.

The study is based on more than two dozen cross-sections of soil, both on land and under water, over thousands of miles in southern China. But they should be representative of the entire world, given the shift of continents over the past 250 million years, said lead author Shu-zhong Shen of the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology. The study also offered the first evidence that the die-off in the sea and on land happened at the same time.

Erwin said the climate changed because of rapid infusions of carbon dioxide and methane into the air. This study doesn't determine how much it warmed, but other research has said temperatures rose by as much as 9 degrees Fahrenheit, making the climate at least 15 degrees warmer than it is today.

Those greenhouse gases that trap heat probably were released because of immense volcanic activity mostly in Siberia, he said. The eruptions ? probably hundreds of them lasting thousands of years ? spewed far more carbon and magma than Earth has witnessed for tens of millions of years. Just one such eruption would cover an area the size of Vermont, Erwin said.

Outside experts had mixed reaction to the study.

Richard Twitchett of Plymouth University in Great Britain called it "an excellent illustration of just how far we've come in getting to grips with the greatest extinction event in the history of life on Earth."

But Luanne Becker, a former geochemist at the University of California Santa Barbara, disagreed with Shen's conclusion about what caused the global die-off. Becker is a longtime proponent of the minority view that an asteroid or comet hitting Earth caused this extinction.

She said that while the study did a great job of defining what happened and how long it lasted, "I do not feel that volcanism alone can trigger some of the most catastrophic extinction events in the history of life on Earth. Rather it would take multiple catastrophes to occur synchronously (impact and volcanism) to trigger a mass extinction event," she wrote in an email.

But Erwin said that despite global searches, scientists haven't found signs of a comet or asteroid impact at the right time for this extinction.

Shen theorized that environmental stress was building and then hit a tipping point and "collapsed in a very rapid way."

"This is also a lesson for the modern times," Shen said. "We don't know what will happen or when it will happen."

This climate change "happened naturally, and it killed everything," Erwin said. But he said that if critics of global warming science think it shows that climate change is nothing to worry about because it has happened naturally in the past, that's the wrong conclusion.

"I think the lesson you take away from this is that you don't want to get anywhere close to a mass extinction," Erwin said. "It took 5 million years before life got better again."

New Space Station Crew Launches in Spectacular Snowy Display

News | Space

NASA astronaut Dan Burbank and Russian cosmonauts Anton Shkaplerov and Anatoly Ivanishin blasted into orbit on board a Russian Soyuz TMA-22 spacecraft

The Soyuz rocket carrying NASA astronaut Dan Burbank and Russian cosmonauts Anton Shkaplerov and Anatoly Ivanishin blasts off from the Baiknour Cosmodrome on Nov. 13, 2011. Image: NASA TV

A Russian rocket successfully lifted off from snowy Central Asia tonight (Nov. 13), carrying a NASA astronaut and two Russian cosmonauts to the International Space Station.

NASA astronaut Dan Burbank and Russian cosmonauts Anton Shkaplerov and Anatoly Ivanishin blasted into orbit aboard a Russian Soyuz TMA-22 spacecraft at 11:14 p.m. EST (10:14 a.m. Baikonour time; 0414 GMT Nov. 14), amid frigid and extremely snowy conditions at the Baikonour Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

Despite intense snowfall at the launch site, the winds remained calm, which enabled Russian controllers to proceed with the scheduled liftoff.

The spaceflyers are expected to arrive at the space station on Wednesday (Nov. 16) at 12:33 a.m. EST (0530 GMT). The trio will dock their space capsule to the Poisk module on the Russian segment of the orbiting outpost.

Burbank previously visited the space station in 2000 and 2006, on missions aboard the space shuttle Atlantis. This will be his first long-duration stint at the massive orbiting laboratory. Shkaplerov and Ivanishin are both conducting their first spaceflight.

Upon their arrival, Burbank, Shkaplerov and Ivanishin will round out the station's Expedition 29 crew, which currently consists of commander Mike Fossum of NASA, Japanese astronaut Satoshi Furukawa and Russian cosmonaut Sergei Volkov.

Fossum, Furukawa and Volkov were asleep in space during preparations for tonight's Soyuz launch, but woke up specially to watch a live broadcast of the liftoff from onboard the orbiting complex, according to NASA officials.

Commander Fossum and his two crewmates have been living and working aboard the station since June. They are scheduled to return to Earth on Nov. 21. Before his departure, Fossum will hand over command of the station to Burbank, who will lead the station's new Expedition 30 mission for the duration of his stay. [50 Great Russian Rocket Launch Photos]

?

Tonight's launch represented a critical milestone for the Russian Federal Space Agency and its fleet of Soyuz rockets. In August, a Soyuz booster carrying a robotic cargo ship crashed in Siberia after an issue cropped up in the rocket's third stage.

The unmanned Progress 44 cargo freighter and its 2.9 tons of supplies onboard were lost in the accident. The crash was a rare mishap for the typically dependable Soyuz brand of rockets.

The accident temporarily grounded the rocket fleet since the booster used to loft the robotic Progress ships are similar to the ones used to deliver astronauts and cosmonauts to the space station. Russia's Federal Space Agency conducted an investigation into the matter, and traced the problem to the gas generator in the rocket's third stage. This conclusion was also confirmed by an independent NASA panel.

The first supply run to the orbiting complex since the August crash occurred on Oct. 30, when an unmanned Progress 45 freighter successfully launched to the station carrying nearly three tons of supplies.

Tonight's launch helps restore confidence in the Russian rocket, which is currently NASA's only way to launch its astronauts to the space station. Following the retirement of the agency's space shuttles, NASA is relying on Russian boosters and vehicles to ferry American spaceflyers to the orbiting outpost.

In the meantime, commercial companies are developing new spaceships to first take cargo and then crewmembers to and from destinations in low-Earth orbit.

In fact, the Expedition 30 crew could also be present for the test flights of two robotic commercial vehicle during their stay at the station. SpaceX's Dragon capsule and Orbital Sciences' Cygnus freighter are tentatively scheduled to carry out demonstration flights of their spacecraft in the new year.

'1,000 Places to See Before You Die' gets a makeover

Cameron Hewitt

The island of Hvar, Croatia offers a number of pebbly beaches and crystal-clear water for swimming. Croatia is included for the first time in 1,000 Places to See Before You Die.

By Harriet Baskas, msnbc.com contributor

Do you dream of visiting the world?s greatest cities, seeing the world?s best attractions and spending a night or two in many of the world?s best hotels and inns??

Then you probably have a well-worn copy of "1,000 Places To See Before You Die" on your nightstand. The New York Times bestseller by Patricia Schultz was first published in 2003 and is part guide book/part wish list and chock full of tantalizing tidbits about far-off places.

But both the world, and the way we get around it, has changed quite a bit since 2003. So for the new edition being released today, Schultz has updated and rewritten much of the book, adding 200 new entries, 28 additional countries and 600 color photographs. For those who don?t want to carry around a tome that weighs more than?2 pounds, there?s now an iPad app version of the book, with lots of extras.

As the new edition hits the stands, Overhead Bin caught up with Schultz to discuss how she chose new must-see destinations.

Q: How did you choose what you included in the book?s first edition?
A: Travel is a very personal thing so I rely on my own internal meter. I aimed to fill the book with things and places with a wow factor and a great sense of beauty, history, romance, integrity -- or just plain fun! There was no set formula or pattern regarding what got put into the mix; I just went with what I have seen in my lifetime that I wanted to share, from the grand to the quirky.

Q: What are the main differences between the first edition and this new edition?
A: At first glance, the most visible difference is the appearance of hundreds of beautiful color photographs (the original used smaller black and white photos). The tried-and-true layout of the original book was kept, with what I hope is an evocative description of each place that will get you off the couch, followed by the helpful info of telephone numbers, websites, prices and when-to-go information that includes best weather, but also annual festivals and events that can augment the experience.

Q: Twenty-eight new countries and 200 more pages, but still the title is ?1000 Places ...? Are there really ?just? 1000 places?
A: Yes, it really is 1000 places -- with a few extras thrown in for good measure! The original 1,000 places got rethought, reorganized, rewritten (and of course updated and fact checked), often combining two and sometimes more places more into a single, newly expanded and embellished entry, thus allowing room for well over 200 new entries.

Q: The world has changed a lot in some places since 2003. What are some places that you decided to cut? Any you were particularly sad to see go?
A: The Three Gorges of China's Yangtze River have been partially submerged since its original description in the book and following the recent completion of the river's massive and much controversial dam. The gorges and valley scenery in general is less dramatic than when I first visited in the late 1990s. But it is still very much worth a visit, and with far more comfortable river cruise ships -- so I decided to keep it, with a new write-up that reflects the change.

Christmas in Bethlehem was once an easy trip from Jerusalem and a joyous occasion attended by celebrating visitors from around the world. It is still on my Life List, but the experience is more guarded, the situation more monitored, with far smaller crowds. It can still be a profound visit and the revision explains that. On the other hand, I have eliminated some but not all of the entries in Zimbabwe. It is a beautiful country in the midst of a protracted transition and not ready for tourism as it once knew it not long ago.

Q:? What are some of the reasons you've included some of the new countries and experiences? And what are a few you're especially pleased about?
A: I found the Baltic nations of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania to be an insightful experience, having experienced all three during one wonderful trip. Many of the countries of the former Soviet bloc had next to no tourism infrastructure when I was researching the original edition. That particular section of the book got an extreme makeover as things have changed hugely since the early '90s. I expanded the entries in Colombia, which has now greatly resolved its troubles and is seeing increased numbers of tourism, as has Nicaragua, hoping to absorb some of the vibrant tourism enjoyed by Costa Rica. The Balkan countries of the former war-divided Yugoslavia -- Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro -- are now one of the Mediterranean?s most special corners.

Q: How do you imagine people will use the book? At 2 pounds, 5 ounces, it?s too heavy to carry around and, with so many entries, too light on information to serve as the only tour book for any one location. What's the 'just right' use?
A: I hope that it will help expand the reader's horizons, to introduce places they never knew existed or knew little about. I hope it is a source of inspiration for those who travel often and are always interested in new discoveries, and for those who have traveled very little -- and everyone in between. And I hope that people don't take the meaning of the title too lightly: This is no dress rehearsal and the wonders of the world are countless.

Q: Is this book a reflection of your travels or perhaps the travel life you wish for? Were there local collaborators for many entries in the book?
A: Yes and yes! A number of these places make up my own yet-to-see Dream List -- I'd need to be 400 years old to say I have seen them all. For the revision I called upon a remarkable network of friends and colleagues with an enviable expertise about those areas I don't know well. After lots of brainstorming and discussing my tentative list, they helped me sort out the must-includes from the maybes.

Q: And what about that app?
A: It is being offered free with the purchase of the first printing of the book, and for sale after that. The entire content of the book is on the app (for iPads only at the moment), in addition to more than 1,000 color photographs, maps and a forum where you can post questions, recommendations and photos that you can share with your friends and fellow road warriors.

Q: For those of us ready to go someplace now, what are five new places from the book you'd encourage people to see not just before they die, but soon?
A: Lake Bled in Slovenia, the historic quarter of Lviv in Ukraine, the Great Mosque of Djenn? in Mali, Wadi Rum in southern Jordan on the way to Aqaba, and old Quito in Ecuador. I can keep going ...

"Occupy Wall Street" Passes Near Scientific American`s Office in New York City

I heard on the news this morning that the Occupy Wall Street encampment at Zuccotti Park in Lower Manhattan was broken up by police overnight and that protesters were set to march north today to the intersection of Sixth Avenue and Canal Street?one block from Scientific American?s office in New York.

Indeed, when various SA employees and I independently surfaced from our subway commutes between 8 and 10 am, several hundred protesters and accompanying media, police and lookers-on were assembled off the intersection at Duarte Square (marked by a statue of Juan Pablo Duarte, a leader who helped establish the Dominican Republican?s independence in the 19th century).

Public health was one of the grounds for the protesters? dismissal (they might return to their original site later today). Zuccotti Park was power-washed this morning and no doubt cleared of the debris that modern humans inevitably leave behind and the vermin that even Manhattan?s finest restaurants struggle to purge. ?Zuccotti lung,? possibly a respiratory infection, has afflicted some of the demonstrators. Also, some reportedly use drugs. Most don?t. Some have fairly obvious mental illnesses. Most don?t. Some wear clothes of the sixties. Most don?t. Some were napping on bed rolls or slouched against a nearby fence, which seems reasonable if one has been roused by police in the middle of the night. Some were chanting something about the UN General Assembly. Overall, it looked and sounded like a gathering of highly socialized humans.

That?s not how insiders or outsiders tend to see it.

?You?re looking at the height of disorder,? a healthy-looking young man wearing a patch with a red cross on it told me through a couple light coughs as I asked him if there was a leader or spokesman to ask about the group?s latest plans. I offered him a cough drop. ?No, thanks. We have ?em.?

Later in the morning, the protesters marched some more and reassembled at Duarte Square, a co-worker told me.

Living outdoors and self-assembling into organized groups and communities is what humans have done quite successfully overall for most of our history. It?s not always pretty, but I?ve always been fascinated by how we make social order and civilization, on scales large and small, despite various adversities?bad weather, bad leaders, bad moods and ill health. Here?s how that looked this morning at Duarte Square.
