Continuing a general trend, gasoline consumption in California decreased about 2 percent in this year's third quarter compared with the same period last year, according to statistics released Friday by the State Board of Equalization.
However, diesel fuel use, typically an indicator of commercial or trucking activity, was up more than 6.5 percent year over year, despite higher diesel prices.
"The third-quarter figures for diesel consumption are a good sign that the economy is getting on track," said Jerome Horton, BOE chairman. "However, while I'm optimistic that we are seeing some economic growth, Californians continue to face financial challenges as gas prices were up 24 percent and gas consumption continued to decline in the third quarter."
From July through September, in-state gasoline consumption totaled 3.727 billion gallons, compared with 3.803 billion in last year's third quarter. The average price of gas statewide in the three-month period was $3.88 a gallon, compared with $3.14 in the year-ago period.
Third-quarter, in-state diesel use totaled 713 million gallons, compared with 669 million in the third quarter of 2010. The average price of diesel fuel in the third quarter was $4.06 a gallon, substantially higher than $3.14 in the year-ago period.
