GREENFORD - When trick or treat returns to the village and Green Township on Oct. 31 it will be in addition to the annual costume judging and parade which have been ongoing events.

At the Sept. 18 meeting, Green Township trustees voted to bring trick or treat after a 32 year absence.

It will be held in Greenford and the township from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

The measure was approved after Sue Bowman, a member of the Green Township Volunteer Fire Department ladies auxiliary brought the issue before trustees.

She said some township residents asked to have the door-to-door trick or treat brought back to the township.

The ladies auxiliary will hold the annual Halloween costume judging at the Bobcat building (old South Range school) at 6:30 p.m. followed by the parade.

The South Range High School band will march the children to the fire station after the judging.

The treat bags, filled by members of the ladies auxiliary with candy, gum and little Halloween trinkets such as tattoos or rings, will be given out directly after the judging and cider and donuts will be served at the fire station.

Bowman said, "The trustees buy the bags for us and we use donated moneys plus our own to buy the candy."

She added, "Most people think that the judging and parade will not be held," adding, "we are hoping that maybe bringing back the door-to-door trick or treat that more of the community children will take part in the judging and parade."

Before voting on the trick or treat issue, Trustee Chairman Mark Stepuk wondered about holding off until the following meeting, but others wanted to have time to get the word out.

Trustees approved the measure with a 2-1 with Trustee Dave Slagle voting against it.

He said people would bring their kids to Greenford because the houses outside the village are too far apart.

"I think we should ask some of the residents in Green Township before voting on it," he said.

Trustees felt that by holding it from 5 to 6:30 p.m. there would still be daylight and they also voted to buy trick or treat bags with a 3-0 vote.
